APPLETON, WI – In the second Division 1 quarter-final matchup of the day No. 8 Janesville Parker edged No. 3 Bay Port 4-3.

Janesville Parker’s sophomore sensation, LHP Hunter Van Zandt, continued his torrid season on Tuesday chalking up another win allowing just one earned run and striking out three. Van Zandt earned Player of the Year honors in arguably the toughest conference in the state (three Big 8 teams in the final eight) boasting an 8-1 record on the year with a 0.90 ERA.

Bay Port struck first in the second, Joey Maier led things off with a double followed shortly by a Logan Froberg RBI single.

Bay Port’s Dakota Klein looked sharp early, retiring the first six Parker hitters in a row, but a leadoff walk in the third came back to haunt the junior LHP. With runners at the corners Coach Martin pulled the squeeze play out of his pocket, executed perfectly by senior Dominick Grunewald.

With the score knotted at one Bay Port took the lead again in the third. The Pirates had their chance to blow things open with the bases loaded and nobody out, but Van Zandt managed to hold Bay Port to just one on a Mac Cisar sacrifice fly to left.

Facing a 2-1 deficit, Parker was down to their last six outs headed to the sixth. A one out error catapulted the Parker sixth inning rally. Carter Powers tied the game with an RBI double and after a pair of walks, Coach Martin pushed the right buttons again calling on junior pinch hitter Brock Welch. Welch came through with a two RBI single through the right side giving the Vikings the 4-2 lead.

Bay Port threatened in their half of the sixth but could only manage one run. The Pirates had a runner in scoring position in the seventh but Van Zandt finished what he started getting the final Bay Port batter to pop out to third.

Janesville Parker will advance to the Semi-Finals earning a date with conference foe and defending state champ Sun Prairie at 6:00 pm.
