OSHKOSH, WI – Two of the top teams in the FVA conference and the state squared off on Thursday night as No. 6 Oshkosh North hosted No. 11 Appleton North at EJ Schneider Field. The two teams scratched and clawed for every run and the Lightning held on for the 6-5 win in a tight contest all the way to the end.
The Lightning got out to an early 2-0 lead after pushing one across in each of their first two innings. Starting pitcher, Taylor Borchers, helped his own cause scoring the first run of the game and driving in the second on a sacrifice fly to center.
On the mound Borchers went four innings, scattering four runs, one earned, striking out three.
The Spartans clawed back to ties things at four in the fourth on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Appleton North came right back and took the lead for good in the fifth. Sophomore Carl Valk hit and hard ground ball, too hot for the first baseman to handle, scoring the go ahead run.
Southpaws Josh Gonzalez and Jack Harvath finished things off out of the pen. The Spartans threatened in their last at bats with a two-out RBI double by Sam Hawley but Harvath got Alex Koch swinging to end the game.
Alex Henwood and Carl Valk both finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored while Taylor Borchers drove in two RBI and scored a run.
