Midwest Future Games Spotlight: LHP Nick Lackney

Left handed pitching is always in high demand, and in this year’s Midwest Future Games LHP Nick Lackney took the mound as one of the more projectable lefties in his class. Lackney plays for Whitefish Bay HS which plays summer high school baseball in Wisconsin. He was one of the more counted on members of the pitching staff along with fellow 2015 southpaw Joseph Kaszubowski who both led the team in innings pitched this season.
Lackney is a lanky 6-foot-4, 165-pound southpaw with a high ceiling. We have seen Lackney show arm strength up to 87 mph from the outfield, although he looks to be more of a pitcher at the next level, it speaks to the type of potential velocity that he could bring to the mound. Previous to the Midwest Future Games we’ve seen his best fastball at 82 mph. At the Midwest Future games Lackney showed more of that outfield arm strength coming out on the mound as he reached 85 mph and pitched comfortably at 82-83.
His long lean frame has obviously grown at a quicker pace than most of his peers and it seems as though he might be hitting his stride of growing into his frame and getting the feel and timing of his delivery. Lackney also showed excellent command of the baseball working down in the zone in his two innings of work. I would look for Lackney to continue making these jumps as he matures and grows into his frame.
