Division 3 State Tournament Roundup: Wisconsin Heights takes the crown

Oconto vs. St. Catherines
APPLETON, WI- The first game of the D3 Semi Final got started a little later than expected after long rain delay in the morning. The Division 3 winner last year Oconto matched up against Racine St Catherine’s.
Racine St Catherine’s got on the board first with Caleb Gillis RBI as Kyle Kruger had a throwing error and give Racine St Catherine’s the lead 1-0 after one inning of play. Racine St Catherine’s plated another run in the second inning with a sac fly RBI by KJ Banse, Racine St Catherine’s would lead 2-0 after two innings.
Oconto finally brought out the sticks and put up a five run 5th inning. Garret Hintz had 2 RBI single in the inning then ended up on third due to a throwing error on the Right fielder Jack Cafferty, which then went out of play. Then Oconto plated a run on a first and third play. Grant Frazer came up big for Oconto with an RBI double.
Racine St Catherine’s came back with two of their own runs with a RBI by Caleb Gillis and they plated another run by an error on third baseman Ricky Mataitis.
Racine St Catherine’s got both runners in the 6th and 7th inning on but could not get them in. They tried to bunt the runner over from 2nd to 3rd with two strikes but failed to get the bunt down.
Oconto took advantage of this in the 8th inning as the second hitter of the inning Cody Zahm walked and then stole second. Tanner Pillsbury came up with a clutch hit to give the defending champs a one run lead.
Racine St Catherine’s got a man on first but once again could not do anything with that.
Oconto will play Wisconsin Heights at around 1:35pm today for Back to Back state title.
MOndovi vs. Wisconsin Heights
The second game of the D3 Semi Final between Mondovi and Wisconsin Heights was a pitchers duel.
Wisconsin Heights got on the board first with a 2 runs in the second one run coming off a error and then other via the walk.
Wisconsin Heights would score again the 4th on C Howard sac fly to drive in the third run of the game. They would lead 3-0 after 4 innings of play.
Mondovi was held till the sixth inning to score their first runs. The plated the first run on a wild pitch and the second run a ground RBI by Peterson.
Mondovi got the lead off guy on with a hit by pitch. They then attempted to move him over but popped out to the pitcher and was almost doubled off at first. Then Purdy reached on a fielder choice and Hayes lined out to the Short stop ad Wisconsin Heights would advance to the D3 State Final to face defending Champs Oconto.

APPLETON,WI - The Division 3 title game took place on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium between the Blue Devils of Oconto and the Vanguards of Wisconsin Heights. Oconto was looking to go back-to-back and win the school’s second state baseball title.
The Vanguards struck first in the bottom of the first innings with a RBI by Will Doherty, and another scored on an error. They would strike again in the 4 inning as Tyler Flamme singled to right and drove in a run along with Carter Howard getting a sac fly. Wisconsin Heights would lead 4-0 after 4 innings.
Oconto got two guys on in the 5th inning but Howard ruined that very quickly as he struck out Brandon Bahde to end the inning and not give Oconto a chance to score.
Wisconsin Heights would score again in the sixth inning all with two outs, as two batters got on due to Oconto’s two of 3 errors in the inning. Curt Barsness would drive in the second run that inning on a single. That would extend the lead to 6-0
Curtis Howard pitched a gem for Wisconsin Heights. He would pitch 7 innings and give up two hits on 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. This is the second state title for Wisconsin Heights as the last one came in 1989. Oconto still put up a good fight and were one game short of defending their state title.
