Top Prospect Games: Third Base Analysis

On the weekend of November 8 and 9, Prep Baseball Report hosted the 2014 Top Prospect Games at Davenport Field on the campus of the University of Virginia for members of the 2016 and 2017 classes. Over 65 players participated, with some of the best talent from all corners of the Commonwealth showing off their ability on the field over the weekend. Here is our analysis of the Third Basemen. (Listed Alphabetically)
Adam Collins, 3B, Glen Allen, 2016
Collins is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound, third baseman that hit from a tall balanced stance. Has a quiet rhythm, with a short stride and balance throughout the swing. Has a smooth load back with a slight arm bar and bat wrap but takes a direct path to the ball with his hands. Explosive lower half, line drive approach, stays behind the baseball, leverage in swing, creates backspin. Had an exit velocity of 84 mph off of the tee. In the field, Collins was athletic, Moved well laterally, and showed average arm strength with a positional velocity of 77 mph. Showed soft hands, good feet, and took good angles to the baseball.
Michael Coritz, 3B, Paul VI, 2016
Coritz is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound, third baseman that hit from a slightly wider stance with balance. Coritz had a very quiet rhythm, small load back, and a short stride to the baseball. All movements in the swing were smooth. Line drive stroke, ability to use the entire field, short path to the ball, has leverage and creates backspin. Had an exit velocity of 78 mph off of the tee. In the field, Coritz had great actions and soft hands. Great instincts, good angles to the ball, first step quickness, good lateral movement. Has the ability to be a plus defender at the position. Can make all of the plays.
Jared DiCesare, 3B, Chantilly, 2016
DiCesare is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound, third baseman that hits from a athletic/balanced stance. Good vertical stacking, high hands, smooth load back with a slight arm bar, short stride, full extension. Line drive approach, stays in the center of the field, able to utilize the whole field. With more strength has the ability to be a run producer as a doubles hitter. Had an exit velocity of 82 mph off of the tee. In the field, DiCesare he had outstanding actions , soft hands, and a good feel for the position. Moved well laterally, good first step movements, was light on his feet. Proper angles to the ball, good glove usage, ability to be a plus defender.
Grayson Gough, 3B, Patriot, 2016
Gough is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound, third baseman that hit from a tall athletic stance with high hands. Smooth load back, short stride, explosive lower half, fast hands. Line drive stroke with gap-to-gap power. Attacks the baseball. Had an exit velocity of 87 mph off of the tee. In the field, possessed above-average arm strength with a 79 positional velocity. Showed soft hands and average for work. Played through the baseball well. Had quick exchanges and was able to keep his arm strength. Good lateral movement with good instincts at the position.
David Mocabee, 3B, Stone Bridge, 2016
Mocabee is a 6-foot, 180-pound, third baseman that hit from a wide balanced stance. Short/quick load back with the hands, short stride to the baseball, little rhythm, and explosive. High hands created leverage throughout the swing. Maintained balance well. Line drive approach with gap-to-gap power. Used hands very well, good extension. Has power potential. Had an exit velocity of 85 mph off of the tee. In the field, Mocabee had smooth movements and good instincts. Had good feet had a steady glove. Showed athleticism in lateral movement. Softness in the hands. Quick hands on his transfers and throws were accurate. Has an above average arm strength with the positional velocity of 81 mph.
Banks Northington, 3B, Charlottesville, 2016
Northington is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound, third baseman that hit from an athletic/balanced stance. Short quick load, shift of weight to the backside was evident, short stride that maintained balance, short, line drive stroke. Really good hands. Gap-to-gap approach. Can utilize the entire field. Had an exit velocity of 86 mph off of the tee. In the field, Northington had average feet and soft hands. Moved better to his glove side. Had a good actions and presence. Moved instinctually at the position.
Luke Paczewski, 3B, Cosby, 2016
Paczewski is a 6-foot, 200-pound, third baseman that hit from a tall athletic position with high hands. Had a short smooth load back with his hands, slight hitch, short stride, and attacked the baseball. Swing was uphill on occasion. Was able to rectify and have a good line drive approach. Created backspin and showed the potential to have power in the future. Had an exit velocity of 84 mph off of the tee. In the field, Paczewski moved well. Showed first step quickness, had instinctual movements, and presented the glove well. Had soft hands and took good angles. Was able to move well laterally. Throws and transfers were quick and accurate.
