On July 22nd and 23rd, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted the 2017 Top Prospect Games at English Field on the campus of Virginia Tech. Some of the best 2017's in the Commonwealth showcased their skills for various colleges and the PBR staff. Here is Part 1 of the pitchers analysis from the event...

2017 TOp Prospect games: pitcher analysis (baird-luke)
Kyle Baird, RHP, Deep Run, 2017
Baird has a lanky frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. He has a long arm action and generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are level and he lands closed before falling off after release. Baird’s fastball had slight sink to it and was up most of the day, running 71-76. His curveball had late 11/5 break and ran 61-63. He threw a sinking changeup with decent armspeed that ran 64-69.
Luke Burton, MIF/RHP, Covenant School, 2017
Burton has an athletic frame and throws from multiple arm slots with a drop and drive delivery, primary using three-quarters and submarine. He has a loose arm and an easy arm action. He lands closed and falls off when throwing from three-quarters and lands even more closed when he drops down. Burton has outstanding feel for how to pitch and change speeds. His fastball had sink up top and down low, running 72-78 up top as he demonstrated the ability to add and subtract on the pitch. His slider sat 64 up top with 10/4 break and it had frisbee action from down low. His changeup from below was outstanding, thrown with great arm action and heavy sink, running 62-66.
Jack Darden, OF/RHP, Smithfield, 2017
Darden has a strong, athletic frame and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. He has a somewhat stiff arm action but a quick arm stroke that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are uphill and he strides out on line to a square landing before coming to an athletic finish. Darden’s fastball touched 83, but was mostly 79-82 with heavy sinking action. He threw a late-breaking 11/5 curveball with decent armspeed that ran 69-71. He also threw a sinking changeup that ran 69-77.
Chris Day, RHP, West Potomac, 2017
Day has an athletic frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a short arm action and a quick armstroke and generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are level and slightly closed as he strides out on line to a square landing before falling off slightly as he finishes. Day’s fastball had heavy run and sink to it and he commanded it well, working in the 75-78 range and generating a ton of ground balls. He threw a sharp 10/4 slider with decent armspeed for strikes that ran 61-67. He flashed a changeup with full armspeed that ran 72.
Patrick Fyvie, LHP, Patriot, 2017
Fyvie has a lanky frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a long, loose arm action and a quick armstroke that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out on line to a slightly open landing. He finishes in an athletic position with a slight recoil. Fyvie’s fastball sat 74-76, touching 77 a few times, with late sink. His curveball had big 2/8 break and ran 57-60. His changeup was thrown with full armspeed and sinking action, running 69-71. Fyvie nibbled a bit in his first inning of work, but did a good job of commanding all three pitches after that.
Stephen Gerade, RHP/1B, TC Williams, 2017
Gerade has an athletic frame with a strong lower half and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and a quick armstroke that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are closed and level as he strides out on line to a closed landing before falling off as he finishes. Gerade’s fastball had late, heavy sink to it and ran 79-81. He also threw a late, tight, 10/4 slider with full armspeed that ran 73-74. He commanded both pitches very well.
Logan Gibson, RHP/1B, Fluvanna, 2017
Gibson has a strong, athletic frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. He has a long arm action and a quick arm that generates velocity with regular effort. His shoulders are slightly closed and uphill as he strides out on line to a square landing with a slight fall off. Gibson’s fastball had some sink and run to it and was 79-81 from the windup and 75-76 in the stretch. He threw a gradual 10/4 breaking slider with inconsistent arm action that ran 62-72. He slowed his arm a bit on his changeup, the pitch had some sink and he commanded it well in the 61-67 range.
Jacob Haney, MIF/RHP, Covenant School, 2017
Haney has a lanky, athletic frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a smooth, drop and drive delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and throws with max effort. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out on line to a square landing before falling off as he finishes. Haney’s fastball has heavy sink and some running action to it and sat 82-84. His slider had 11/5 action and flashed plus, with late, sharp action to it and full armspeed, running 68-71. His changeup was thrown with full armspeed and sinking action, sitting 76.
Evan Justice, LHP, Collegiate School, 2017
Justice has a tall, lanky frame and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a tall and fall delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and a lightning-quick arm that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are level and closed and he lands closed before falling off hard as he finishes. His crossfire delivery made it very hard for hitters to pick him up. Justice pounded the zone with has fastball and touched 86, he worked at 81-85 with sink and a bit of run to armside. He threw a big, 1/7 breaking curveball with decent armspeed that he threw for strikes at the bottom of the zone, running 66-69. His changeup was straight and was 76.
Austin Landrum, RHP, Battlefield, 2017
Landrum has an athletic frame and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and a quick armstroke that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are uphill and closed as he strides out on line before landing slightly open and coming to an athletic finish. Landrum’s fastball had good plane to it as well as a bit of late run. The pitch touched 84 and he worked at 81-83 with it. His slider flashed plus with late, tight 10/4 break with decent armspeed that ran 72-76. His changeup also flashed plus and was thrown with full armspeed and fading action, running 75-79.
Brandon Luke, RHP, Centreville, 2017
Luke has an athletic frame and throws from a high three-quarters slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a shorter, loose arm action and a quick armstroke that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are downhill and online as he strides out to a square landing with an open front foot before he comes to an athletic finish. Luke’s fastball was 78-80 with slight run and sink to it. His curveball was thrown with good armspeed and had sharp break, running 64-66. His curveball had different shape depending on where it was thrown, 11/5 to gloveside and 12/6 to armside. His changeup was thrown with decent armspeed and armside run, sitting 71-72.
