With the majority of pitchers working in the upper-80s, low-90s, consistent offensive production was few and far between at the Prep Baseball Report Future Games on July 31-August 2 at Grand Park Complex in Westfield, IN.
That is, except for Duncan Pence.
After taking arguably the best two rounds of batting practice during the positional showcase portion on Thursday, the athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound infielder from Farragut HS (TN) proceeded to barrel everything thrown his way on Friday and Saturday.
After three games and the showcase, Pence clearly emerged as the top offensive performer at the Future Games, along with Kansas left-handed hitting 1B Joey Wentz. Pence also played a flawless shortstop and third base while leading the Select Team to a 3-0 record.
In an event loaded with the top 2016 prospects from 13 states, Pence’s all-around performance earned him the Most Valuable Player of the Prep Baseball Report Future Games.
Pence, who is verbally committed to Tennessee, opened Friday’s game play by going 2-for-3 with two RBI in Select’s 10-3 victory against Team Wisconsin. Against Team Pennsylvania, he went 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored, one RBI and one stolen base. Pence capped his whirlwind performance by going 1-for-2 with a double that one-hopped the centerfield fence, and scored a run.
For the weekend, Pence finished 4-for-7 with three RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base. Aside from his offensive production, Pence was clocked at 84 mph across the infield, ran a 7.06 60 and recorded a 94-mph exit velocity.
