The landscape of the updated overall Class of 2017 player rankings have changed dramatically over the last four months, chiefly because the landscape of the Prep Baseball Report state-specific coverage area has expanded since the last update.
It is important to note that the PBR overall rankings only reflect the states that we intimately know from our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff. The updated Top 150 Class of 2017 rankings now includes Florida, Louisiana and Maryland, in addition to our previously established states. All told, the overall rankings include 21 states and Ontario.
The inclusion of Florida changes the complexion of the overall rankings – including three prospects in the top 10 – nevertheless, there have been other significant shifts, including a new No. 1 overall prospect.
LHP Brandon Garland (Unicoi County HS, TN) catapults up to the top spot after the 6-foot-2, 182-pounder sat 89-91 mph to go along with a 75-77 mph curveball at a winter PBR Tennessee event. Easy and athletic from a ¾ slot, clearly there is a lot more in the tank, too. Garland, who’s currently uncommitted, also has done it on the field. As a freshman last spring, he racked up 91 strikeouts in 55 innings while posting a 6-2 record and a 0.90 ERA.
Garland slightly edged out several others for the top spot. RHP Altoon Coleman (Winter Springs HS, FL), a physically advanced 6-foot-2, 215-pound Florida State recruit, checks in at No. 2, followed by 6-foot-8 RHP Ben Jordan (West Carter HS, KY), who’s been a fixture in the top 10 since the initial rankings were launched.
Coleman is one of three Florida prospects in the top 10, joining SS Mark Vientos (Flanagan HS, FL) and power-hitting 1B Alejandro Toral (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL). Vientos is verbally committed to Miami while Toral, who arguably features the best left-handed power in the country, is uncommitted.
There are several other new names in the top 10, as well. OF Brad Czerniejewski (Lake Forest HS, IL) makes a big leap up to No. 6 overall after the Texas Christian recruit put on an electric offensive show at the PBR Illinois Underclass Invitational. OF/LHP Daniel Cabrera (John Curtis HS, LA), a LSU recruit, is arguably the top two-way prospect in the country.
LHP Hunter Milligan (Greenbrier HS, AR), SS Nolan Williams (Home School, KS) and RHP/OF Jordon Adell all return to the top 10 as well. Enough reading about it. See for yourself.
