Tournament of Stars: PBR Day 3 Notebook

Executive Director

CARY, NC – The second day of game play at USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars showcased some of the top 2015 and 2016 prospects from the Prep Baseball Report coverage area. Here’s a look at some of the top performances Thursday from our 17-state coverage area:

+ RHP Chandler Day (Watkins Memorial HS, OH) started the second game of the day for USA Pride and the 6-foot-4, 162-pound Vanderbilt didn’t disappoint. Day features extremely long limbs and certainly has plenty of room to physically develop. He pitched three solid innings, yielding two hits, one run while striking out three and walking one. His fastball sat 90-91, topping at 92, with arm-side run and late life through the zone. His slider showed short, tight break at 79 mph, thrown consistently strikes. And while he didn’t throw his changeup often, he offered a few with late sinking action. After rolling through the first inning, Day got in trouble in the second, yielding a single and a hit batsmen to start the inning. But he bore down to retire the next three batters, punctuated by a strikeout on a slider, to get out of the inning unscathed. Day is currently ranked No. 2 in Ohio’s 2015 class and No. 6 overall.

+ RHP Riley Thompson (Christian Academy HS, KY), the No. 1-ranked prospect in Kentucky and No. 5 overall, pitched 2.1 innings for the USA Brave team Thursday. The athletically built 6-foot-4, 185-pound Louisville recruit sat 89-91 in the first inning, bumping a 92 once. In the second inning, his fastball ranged between 87-90. Although he worked off his fastball well, Thompson’s slider showed promise of being a go-to offering in the future, as he generally threw it with two strikes to put away a hitter. And more times than not, he did. In the second inning, he struck out the side on sliders of 78, 79 and 80 mph. Thompson ran into some trouble in the third inning, and finished his day with four strikeouts, three earned runs while striking out four and walking three.
