Leading into their senior year, draft prospects typically spend the summer crisscrossing the country to attend various showcases and tournaments in hopes of making an impression on scouts. Players commonly refer to the experience as a whirlwind. For RHP Gray Fenter (West Memphis HS, AR), that description became quite literal.
Like many of his peers, Fenter started the summer by attending the Perfect Game National Showcase and Tournament of Stars. It was the usual routine until the end of the summer. In the span of a few weeks, Fenter de-committed from Mississippi, committed to Mississippi State, made Team USA’s 18U National Team, won a gold medal and then rode out a hurricane before getting assistance from the Mexican military to get back to the United States.
“It was pretty crazy,” Fenter said. “This summer has been ridiculous.”
