Ohio Insider: Top Underclass Uncommitted Two-Way Prospects

With the Summer season coming to an end and the 2016-2017 high school sports season as well as fall ball getting underway, we would like to take a look at some of the top uncommitted prospects at each position. Over the past month we looked at the top 2017 prospects and as you can see by our 2017 Player Rankings there are numerous talented prospects available.

Today we are looking at the top uncommitted underclass Two-Way Prospects in Ohio. We will look to create a few top uncommitted lists each week and as you can see by our 2018 and 2019 Player Rankings, there are numerous talented prospects available.

Class of 2018

Marcus Ernst, 2B, Dublin Coffman, 2018
Ranked: 17th in Ohio’s 2018 class
Scouting Report: One of the top two-way guys in his class with a 6-foot, 175-pound athletic frame. A very smooth swinger from the left-side. Is able to creates excellent energy into contact through a rhythmic leg kick load and well timed weight shift. Starts with his hands low and uses a barrel tip to remain fluid during his stride. A strong kid with a very fast bat. Produced consistently line drives in batting practice with the ability to create backspin. Has reached a top exit velocity of 92 mph off the tee. Was one of, if not the top offensive performer at the Top Prospect Games. In the infield he has solid lateral mobility and reacts well to ball off the bat. A cerebral player that reads swings and repositions himself accordingly. Glove skills are adequate. Likely projects as a second baseman. Advanced pitchability for his age with feel for all three of his pitches. Will sit in the 81-84 mph range with his fastball and we have seen him touch 85 mph multiple times. Has the ability to work both sides of the plate and change eye levels. Curveball has late, sharp action with an 11/5 shape at 65-68 mph. His changeup is his best offspeed pitch as he is comfortable throwing it in any count. The pitch has good fade to it at 70-73 mph.
College Outlook: His ability to swing the bat has been well chronicled and remains his most attractive tool moving forward, but his talent on the mound shouldn’t be ignored. The righty has clean arm action and a low effort delivery. His delivery, arm action, and athleticism makes velocity increases a questions of when not if. With his ability to throw three pitches for strikes he profiles as a starter if he keeps throwing at the next level. A three sport athlete that should see enhancement to all of his game once he is baseball full time.
