Speed is the name of OF Marquise Doherty’s (Winnetonka HS, MO) game and he has two games—baseball and football. Two-sport stars have been a trend in the Midwest recently with Bubba Starling getting drafted by the Royals in 2011 with the fifth overall pick and Monte Harrison going to the Brewers with the 50th pick in 2014. Both excelled on the diamond and gridiron and were committed to play both sports at Nebraska. Instead, they were lured to professional baseball with big signing bonuses.
Scouts aren’t putting Doherty on the level of Starling and Harrison, but they’re not looking past him either. He has the raw tools scouts look for and he’s strong.
“It’s hard to find those tools,” one scout said. “He has bat strength and serious raw power. Nothing is below average.”
