Prep Baseball Report's MN Winter Open event took place on Saturday, March 4, 2017. The event was held at Starters Sports Training in Shakopee, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota and Illinois who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff.

top 2017 prospects (Alphabetical)
Riley Ahern, RHP/3B, Holy Angels, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery with slight tuck and turn at balance point, good explosion down mound, and arm is quick out front. Fastball was 82-84 mph for consistent strikes. Breaking ball has improved with tighter 11/5 spin and better depth. Changeup was flat and firm in this outing. 4.68 home-to-first time. Tall square stance, good weight transfer, line drive swing plane, occasional length to swing, drives ball well gap to gap, 91 mph exit velocity. Shows solid glove and appropriate footwork, range limits him to 3B or 1B, accurate arm with carry to bag, 82 mph arm strength across infield.
James Childs, C/RHP, Andover, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.56 home-to-first time. Square stance with shoulder load, flat swing plane through contact, shows good hands to baseball with solid bat speed, mid/pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Mobile behind plate with flexibility and athleticism, shows ability to receive with strong hands and quiet movements, works around plate with feet, longer release on throws, accurate to bag, 2.05-2.30 pop times with 75 mph arm strength. On mound; strike thrower with three pitches, short arm action, slight effort in release, varies from OT to H3/4 slot. Fastball was 78-80 mph with occasional late ASR. 11/5 curveball has small break and works bottom of zone well. Solid fade and command of changeup.
Ross Indlecoffer, 3B, Mounds View, 2017
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. Highest ranked uncommitted player in MN 2017 class. Currently ranked #12 in state. 4.47 home-to-first time. Balanced at plate, hard line drive contact, gap to gap hitter, finds barrel consistently, 88 mph exit velocity. Above avg. actions in field, hands and feet play well at third base, arm plays up with above avg. carry and accuracy to bag with quick release, 79 mph arm strength.
