No. 22 Chatham Glenwood 10, Springfield Lanphier 0
Glenwood (1-0; 1-0) 6-foot-6 University of Indiana-bound RHP Brian Hobbie had quite a day in the Titans season-opening win over Springfield Lanphier (0-2; 0-1). The future Hoosier hurler did not allow a Lion hitter to hit safely. That’s right. An Opening Day no-no. Hobbie fanned seven and walked only one while helping himself at the plate with two hits. The Titans ended this one in the bottom of the seventh when they hit Lanphier with six runs to initiate the 10-run rule. Cody Johnson had two hits, including a double and drove home two for Glenwood.
No. 5 Oak Park 3, Miami (FL) Hialeah 1
The Huskies opened up their 2014 season behind senior RHP Ryan Chancellor’s four-hitter. The run Chancellor (1-0) gave up was unearned and he finished with six strikeouts, on only 74 pitches. WIU-bound Sam Cottingham-Beard doubled and plated three Huskie runs while junior Patrick Rumoro had two hits, including an RBI double. Andrew Nelson chipped in with a single and a run scored.
No. 6 Libertyville 11, Rocky Mountain (CO) 4
Libertyville (2-1) took out their frustration from Tuesday’s heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Brophy Prep (AZ) by pounding the Colorado school on Wednesday. TCU-bound PBR All-Stater Evan Skoug had two singles, a bomb that ended out in the desert and drove home four runs for the Wildcats.
Hunter VanWagner had a pair of singles and two RBI while junior SS Jimmy Govern had three more hits, including a double and an RBI. Senior Conor Simpson had a pair of doubles and two RBI. Grinnell College-bound RHP, Andrew Mack (2-0) allowed two runs in his six-inning stint, allowing six hits. Wildcat closer LHP Andrew Plunkett gave up one hit and struck out three as he nailed down the save.
No. 47 Edwardsville 6, No. 45 Moline 2
Edwardsville (3-0) struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning at Tom Pile Field and went on to an easy win over the 42nd-ranked Maroons. The Tigers were led by Fahd Shakeel, who singled, hammered his second home run of the season, scored and drove home two runs for Edwardsville. Junior C Brock Weimer chipped in with two hits, including a double and drove home a run. Concordia-bound RHP Alex Meyers (2-0) picked up the win on the mound.
