Updated PIAA Class A Super 16 (4-20-15)

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

One month into a precipitation-filled spring, we are releasing our first in-season update to the PIAA Class A Super 16 (i.e. the teams we believe are best positioned to reach the state tournament, if district tournaments started today). A couple of notes:

1. X-Y under "Berth" = [District]-[Bid]. For example, 3-2 is the runner-up from District III.
2. If multiple districts are listed on one line, those districts will form a sub-regional to determine that bid.

PIAA Class A Super 16
Berth School Record Notes
3-1 Lancaster County Christian
6-2 The Lions have held five of eight opponents to two runs or less and scored an impressive 2-1 win over 3A Berks Catholic.
12-1 Masterman
2-3 The Blue Dragons jump into this spot by virtue of their 9-4 victory over other Philadelphia Public League contender GAMP.

2-1 Lackawanna Trail
3-1 The Lions slot in here after a convincing home-and-home sweep over perennial contender Old Forge, as well as a 9-3 win over Blue Ridge. Only loss came against strong 3A program Scranton Prep.
4-1 North Penn-
Mansfield

3-3 Playing against predominantly larger schools, some of the Tigers losses have been ugly, but they hold their spot here by virtue of a 9-6 win over defending district champ Canton.

1-1 Christopher Dock Mennonite 5-1 Outside of their loss to district AA favorite Devon Prep, the Pioneers have outscored their other opponents 47-4.
11-1 Pius X
3-3 Of all the teams here, the Royals hold on their spot is the most tenuous, despite a 12-2 drubbing of pre-season favorite Marian Catholic. As an independent, by district rules, Pius X must finish at least .500 in order to qualify for the district tournament.

5-1 Meyersdale Area 12-0 The Red Raiders continue to post video game numbers, outscoring their opponents 151-12.
3-2 Newport 5-4 While Millersburg Area (also with a 5-4 record) has played a stronger schedule, the Buffaloes slide in here by virtue of their 3-1 win over the Indians.

7-1 Greensburg Central Catholic 10-1 Centurions have held seven of ten opponents to two runs or less (including a 6-0 win over Serra Catholic) since an opening day loss to 3A Mars Area.
6-2 Ferndale Area 9-0 Beat Portage Area, the previous holder of this spot 5-1, while also recording a 2-1 win over a solid North Star program.

10-1 West Middlesex 2-1 Not much to go on in Northwest PA so far due to the weather, but the Big Reds haven't done anything to get bumped from this spot.
9-2 DuBois Central Catholic 3-0 The Cardinals have held serve in this spot through a very limited slate of games.

6-1 Blairsville 7-1 The Bobcats have held serve in this spot, while also holding five of eight opponents to one run or less.
7-3 Serra Catholic 9-3 Save for its loss to Greensburg Central Catholic, the Eagles other two defeats came out-of-state. Have held every opponent to two runs or less in all of its in-state wins.

9-1 Elk County Catholic 3-1 Three wins by a combined 38-10. One loss was to district 3A favorite Punxsutawney Area.
7-2 Vincentian Academy 6-3 The Royals only in-state loss is to 4A contender Shaler Area. Have trounced other PA opponents by a combined score of 66-3, not allowing more than one run in any of those games.
