The Class of 2014 is loaded with top-end talent in Pennsylvania. The top five players in the updated rankings have committed to Arizona, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Stanford and Arkansas. The next 10-15 prospects are likely to make similar commitments during the course of 2013. With the amount of talent bunched together at the top it will be fun to watch this group of players battle for supremacy over the final two seasons of their high school careers.
Norwin High School's J.J. Matijevic remains at No. 1, but is being pushed very hard by the emergence of several players, most notably SS Liam Sabino from Blair Academy. Matijevic is the reigning WPIAL Class AAAA Player of the Year and will attempt to lead Norwin to a third consecutive undefeated regular season. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound left-handed hitter has committed to Arizona and can now concentrate on his final two seasons of high school baseball.
Sabino sits at No. 2 after impressing with his smooth defense and developing offense at numerous national level events in the past six months. The Pennsylvania resident plays his high school baseball just across the state line in New Jersey and will push Matijevic and the others in the top ten for top honors over the course of the next two years.
New to the top ten is LHP LaRon Mitchell from Susquehanna HS in Harrisburg. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound lefty sat 88-90 recently at the Preseason All-State Showcase with command of his complimentary pitches. Mitchell's performance vaulted him from No. 21 to No. 7.
Also moving into the top ten following an impressive performance at the Preseason All-State event is 6-foot-6, 205-pound RHP Adam Seibert from Episcopal Academy. Seibert sat 89-91 without overthrowing. His changeup was equally impressive at 81 mph with arm-side run. He dedicated himself to training in the off-season and gained 20 pounds while adding 4-5 mph to his fastball.
Following is the breakdown of the top ten heading into the start of the 2013 high school season. Rankings will be updated again in June following the state playoffs.
