By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The Unsigned Senior Showcase gave college coaches the opportunity to get another look at a number of talented prospects in the Class of 2014 still searching for the right college fit. Following is a review of the top pitchers in attendance.

top  prospect

Brendan MillerRHP Brendan Miller (Williams Valley HS)

Miller is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound righty with a solid frame and repeatable mechanics that sat 85-86 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Williams showcased a quick arm and a fluid delivery. He commanded the strike zone and showed solid secondary pitchers. His curveball sat 71-72 with an 11/5 break and his 77 mph changeup was thrown at fastball arm speed. Miller worked down in the zone and showed the ability to use both sides of the plate.

Miller is ranked No. 106 in the latest Class of 2015 rankings and should garner considerable interest following his performance.

best of the rest (alphabetical order)

RHP Patrick Boyer (Greensburg Salem HS)

Boyer sat 82-84 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with late life to his fastball. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound prospect has a very projectable frame and the potential to add significant velocity. Boyer's 72 mph curveball showed 11/5 break at 72 mph and his 72 mph splitter showed the potential to be a quality out pitch. Boyer has the chance to be a sleeper in this class. With some work to lengthen out his throwing motion he could continue to see velocity gains for some time.

LHP/OF Ron Di Matteo (Penncrest HS)

Di Matteo sat 82-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a quick arm and a heavy fastball. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound lefty has a strong lower body that he uses to create drive to the plate. He has a simple delivery that allows him to repeat his mechanics and showed good command of all his pitches. Di Matteo flashed a solid 1/7 breaking curveball at 72 mph with tight rotation and a changeup at 74 mph.

RHP/C Shane Emrich (Spring-Ford HS)

Emrich is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound righty with an athletic frame that sat 81-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. He also commanded a 70 mph curveball with 11/5 break and a 68 mph changeup that showed some arm side run. Emrich displayed repeatable mechanics and command of the strike zone.

OF/LHP Matt Hasenauer (Pine Grove HS)

Hasenauer is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound lefty that sat 67-69 out of a 3/4 arm slot. He displayed a 56 mph curveball with 1/7 action and a 56 mph splitter that he uses as his changeup. Hasenauer commanded the strike zone and worked down in the zone consistently.

OF/RHP Matt Kellar (Perkiomen Valley HS)

Kellar is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound righty that sat 82-83 with some arm side run to his fastball from a high 3/4 arm slot. He also commanded a 72 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 76 mph changeup. Kellar has an athletic frame and more in the tank if he were to concentrate on this aspect of his game.

2B/RHP Calvin Salazar (Cheltenham HS)

Salazar has a unique delivery that allows him to hide the baseball well. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound righty incorporates a high leg kick and rotates his upper body to show his numerals to the hitter. He sat 80-81 with some arm side run to his fastball. Salazar also flashed a 71 mph breaking ball that has slider action and a 75 mph changeup.

RHP Brandon Shirk (Pequea Valley HS)

Shirk is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound righty that sat 78-79 from a high 3/4 arm slot. He showcased a fluid delivery and hides the baseball very well. Shirk displayed an 11/5 breaking curveball at 64 mph. While the pitch lacks velocity it shows good shape and the potential to be a solid out pitch. He also commanded a 69 mph changeup. Shirk just turned 17 in August and has a tremendous upside. His frame should continue to develop for some time and significant velocity gains are likely.
