Although the snow just began to fly and the high school season is still four months away, it's never too early to begin thinking about being back outside and on the baseball diamond. In the spirit of Thinking Spring, we take a look at some of the premier events in store for the summer of 2014.
PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18) - By invitation only
The 2013 version of the Top Prospect Games at Bucknell University was a complete success with 35 colleges in attendance and 26 prospects that participated having announced college commitments to date. This year's event at the Petersen Complex on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh promises to be bigger and better. The state of the art artificial surface at Charles L. Cost Field will provide prospects with a perfect opportunity to showcase their talents.
PBR Mid-Atlantic border battle (July 18-20) - By invitation only
This event will bring together top prospects from six states to compete in a round-robin schedule of games. During the course of the three day event players will also be evaluated in the 60 yard dash, at their defensive position and in a round of live batting practice. Players will play for one of five teams representing their geographic region; Eastern Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia/Virginia and New York/New Jersey. Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland will host this inaugural event on its brand new artificial surface.
WV Top Prospect Games (august 9-10) - by invitation only
The first event of its kind in West Virginia promises to be a great way to complete the summer and jump start the fall. Although the event will be held in West Virginia, it is likely to draw prospects from a number of surrounding states as well. The newly remodeled artificial turf surface at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Charleston, WV will be a perfect venue for top level prospects looking to showcase their talent. The upgrades to the facility have allowed Marshall University to make the site the home for all practices and non-conference games in 2014.
The PA Underclass Games are the only event yet to be officially added to the summer events schedule. Last year's Underclass Games took place at Misericordia University. The 2014 version of the Underclass Games will take place on June 10 and 11 at a sight to be decided. Look for complete details to be released in the very near future.
Two Open Identification showcases have also been scheduled. They will take place on back-to-back days in July on either side of Pennsylvania. The Western PA event will take place on July 8 at Seton Hill University with the Eastern PA event being held on July 9 at the brand new Maplezone Sports Institute complex in Garnet Valley, PA. Both complexes are artificial turf surfaces.
