The Preseason All-State Showcase began at 11:00am and roughly eight hours later the final three pairings of pitchers were all that were left to end the day. The event was filled with highly ranked prospects in every class and at every position. While impressive performances were turned in by many players in the first eight hours, what took place in the final 15 minutes was the highlight of the day.
RHP Adam Seibert took the mound at 8:00pm and immediately sent a buzz through the crowd with an 89 mph first pitch fastball. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound prospect from Episcopal Academy went on to touch 91 mph three times in an electric bullpen session. Seibert has a high 3/4 delivery and a quick arm that works in rhythm with his lower half. He had difficulty getting on top of his 74 mph curveball, but his 82 mph changeup was thrown at fastball arm speed and showed good arm side run. Seibert has added 10-15 pounds and 4-5 mph on his fastball since we last saw him in September. He appears to be primed for a big 2013 high school season and will see his stock rise dramatically on the national recruiting scene as a result of his performance.
LHP LaRon Mitchell followed Seibert to mound number two for the next to last bullpen session of the day. With the crowd still buzzing from Seibert's performance, Mitchell gave them more to buzz about. Mitchell was the most impressive athlete of the day from a visual standpoint. At 6-foot-5, 215-pounds he has complete control of his body. The lefty from Susquehanna Towhship HS sat 88-90 with command of three pitches. Mitchell's 75 mph curveball has good 1/9 rotation and late bite. His 74 mph changeup is thrown at near fastball arm speed and shows late arm side run. Mitchell has added an inch and 10 pounds since we saw him in November sitting 86-87. With his imposing size and athletic actions on the mound Mitchell should see additional gains in velocity in the coming months and years. Like Seibert, Mitchell will see an enormous jump in his stock on the national recruiting scene as a result of his performance.
