Q&A With Canisius College Commit Ryan Creps

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Ryan CrepsCanisius College is coming off a banner season finishing 42-17 and making a trip to the NCAA Division I regional tournament following a MAAC Championship. 2B/OF Ryan Creps (Indiana Area HS) recently announced his verbal commitment to help the Golden Griffins continue that success.

Creps is a 6-foot, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2B/OF that hit .465 with 19 runs scored and 27 RBI as a junior in 2013. He has shown some gap power and an 85 mph bat exit velocity in several solid performances at PBR events. Creps moves well (7.14 60-yard dash) and has demonstrated that he is capable of playing middle infield and outfield positions at the next level. He went 4-for-10 with a double and two triples during his appearances in the PBR Pennsylvania Fall College Prospect Program.

Creps discussed his college choice and the process that led to his decision with Prep Baseball Report.

PBR:  Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?

Creps: I have decided to attend Canisius College. While making an unofficial visit in August, I instantly liked the campus and its location in the city. Fortunately they have the majors I am interested in as well. But the most important aspect to me was meeting Coach McRae and appreciating how welcome he made me feel. I was impressed with the high level of integrity and enthusiasm he has for the sport and his team.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

Creps: I was also considering Binghamton, Ohio, Morehead State, and Youngstown State.

PBR:  Was distance from home a factor in your decision?

Creps: Distance was somewhat a factor in my decision. I wanted to be no more than 5-6 hours away from home so my family could attend the games.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you?  How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?

Creps: The coaches first saw me play at the Mid East Camp hosted by All American Baseball. After that camp, I contacted all of the coaches in attendance to find out how they felt I performed. Canisius showed immediate interest so I kept emailing and calling Coach McRae.

PBR:  What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Creps: The coaches expect me to compete for a starting job my freshman year. With a couple middle infielders graduating next year, I am hopeful for an opportunity to see playing time.

PBR:  What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Creps: I would say that my hitting is probably my biggest strength at this point. Being a left-handed hitter should be helpful for the team. Also, another strength I have is my mindset that team comes first and to continually improve all aspects of my game in order to help with the program’s success.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?

Creps: This summer I played for the Altoona Railbirds in the AAABA league. My most memorable experiences came when playing against talented competition. I had the opportunity to face and play with D1 and D2 players, along with learning from their impressive level of play. My teammates also gave me important perspectives and insights about their schools and life as a collegiate baseball player.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?

Creps: My current GPA is 3.95

PBR:  Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?

Creps: My team and I have many realistic goals going into next season. As one of the team’s co-captains, my job is to keep pushing everyone, including myself, to work harder and continue to get better. We experienced success last year by winning our section but losing in the first round of WPIAL playoffs. Our goal is to improve in all aspects of our game so we can make a longer run through the 2014 playoffs.

PBR: How did Prep Baseball Report aid you in gaining exposure as a potential college baseball recruit?

Creps: Prep Baseball Report has helped me in many ways as a potential college baseball recruit. They continually offered me opportunities to play in front of college coaches along with making and posting important skill videos. Also, whenever I had a question, the PBR staff was always an exceptional help. They would respond within minutes of my email with useful information. I am very appreciative of all that PBR has done to facilitate me playing at the next level.
