PA Underclass Games: RHP Analysis

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia kicked into high gear over the past two weeks with the PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18), Shenandoah Valley College Prospect Showcase (June 23) and the PA Underclass Games (June 24-25) offering college coaches a glimpse at some 175 prospects in a short period of time.

Over the course of the coming week we will analyze the prospects that performed by position. Today we take a look at the right-handed pitchers that participated in the PA Underclass Games.

Top Prospects

RHP Colin Maldonato (Scranton), 2015

Colin MaldonatoMaldonato is a strong 6-foot-1, 200-pound righty with a repeatable delivery. He sat 84-86 from a high 3/4 arm slot with late life to his fastball. The uncommitted senior showed good arm speed on his 72 mph curveball with 11/5 break and his 77 mph changeup. Maldonato worked quickly and commanded the zone allowing one hit over three innings of work. Currently ranked No. 74 in the PA Class of 2015, Maldonato registered five strikeouts during his time on the mound.

RHP John Matthews (Punxsutawney), 2016

John MatthewsMatthews turned heads by showing a significant velocity bump since his last appearance at a PBR event. The 6-foot, 160-pound two-way prospect sat 84-87 while touching 88 twice in two innings of work. Matthews commanded a sharp breaking, two-plane curveball with 11/5 break at 75 mph and a changeup at 79 mph. The righty also flashed a drop down slider at 75 mph and a fastball thrown at the same arm angle that had significant arm side run. Matthews will be participating in the PBR Future Games for Team Pennsylvania as a shortstop and will throw and inning as well.

RHP Levi Stoudt (Perkiomen School), 2016

Levi StoudtStoudt impressed with a quality two pitch mix out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound righty sat 83-85 with fluid rhythm and a repeatable delivery. Stoudt's changeup impressed. The uncommitted junior throws the pitch at the same arm speed as his fastball with significant arm side run. Stoudt used his two pitches equally during three innings of work registering five strikeouts.


Best of the Rest (alphabetical)

RHP James Balogh (Pocono Mountain East), 2018

Balogh sat 78-80 with some cut action out of a high 3/4 arm slot. The righty has a loose arm and velocity gains are likely as his 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame fills out. Balogh also displayed an 11/5 breaking curveball at 65 mph thrown at fastball arm speed. He worked three effective innings in game play yielding just one hit.

RHP/1B Luke Blasick (Halifax), 2018

Blasick is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound righty with a physical frame for a freshman. The righty sat 79-81 with a deliberate delivery from a 3/4 arm slot. Blasick also flashed a 66 mph slider during three innings of work. The two-way prospect displayed capable glove work at 1B with a 78 mph arm across the diamond and registered an 81 mph bat exit velocity out of square stance with a leg lift stride. Blasick went hitless in six at bats during game action but showed the ability to barrel the baseball routinely.

RHP Chad Cooperman (Salisbury Township), 2016

Cooperman is a 5-foot-7, 145-pound righty with a solid idea of how to attack hitters. He sat 77-78 from a high 3/4 arm slot with solid command of his fastball. Cooperman also displayed a spike curveball at 65 mph with significant down action that he used routinely to keep hitters off balance. The two-way prospect should continue to develop as a pitcher as his frame matures.

RHP Ben Hudock (Liberty), 2016

Hudock has a lean 5-foot-10, 150-pound frame and gets the most out of his frame. The righty sat 78-80 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a hip coil delivery. His fastball shows arm side run and late life down in the zone. Hudock also commanded a 67 mph curveball with some tilt that gives the junior two quality pitches to work with. He worked three innings in game player registering three strikeouts.

RHP Scott Leitholf (Northern York), 2017

Leitholf is a 6-foot-4, 160-pound freshman with a big upside. The righty sat 79-81 with good flow to his delivery. Leitholf also commanded a 66 mph 12/6 breaking curveball with some tilt. He worked three innings yielding three hits while striking out three during game play. Leitholf will be a high follow in this class with his projectable frame and repeatable delivery.

RHP/OF Joseph Mione (Bishop McDevitt), 2016

Mione worked comfortably at 80-83 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound righty showed some arm side run and late life to his fastball with a hip coil delivery. Mione's 66 mph 11/5 breaking curveball displayed sharp, late break while he also commanded an effective 72 mph slider. The junior's changeup sat 70-72 and was thrown at near fastball arm speed. Mione worked three innings in game play striking out four.

RHP Bryson Turner (Brandywine Heights), 2015

Turner sat 80-83 from a 3/4 arm slot while displaying a 71 mph curveball with sweeping action. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound uncommitted senior also flashed a 75 mph changeup with some arm side run thrown at near fastball arm speed. Turner worked four innings in game action, striking out two.

RHP/OF Travis Wickard (Boiling Springs), 2016

Wickard worked three innings in game action giving up just two hits while sitting 82-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound junior also commanded a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 73 mph changeup with near fastball arm speed. Wickard has repeatable mechanics and showed the ability to pound the strike zone routinely.
