Junior Spotlight: SS/2B Ray Scala

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Ray ScalaRay Scala comes off a solid sophomore season at Laurel HS, hitting .340 with a .429 on base percentage and 10 stolen bases. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound middle infielder has a strong enough arm to play on the left side of the infield and runs well enough (6.80) to also make the move to the outfield at the next level if need be. Scala gets out of the box well from the left side of the plate and has demonstrated the ability to use all fields with a prototypical lead-off hitter's approach at the plate.

Scala, ranked No. 99 in the PA Class of 2015, has played for Creekside Fitness in the Youngstown Class "B" League the past two summers. He has been a key contributor in Creekside's run to a 2012 NABF 16U World Series Championship and a 3rd place finish in 2013. Scala hit .383 in Class "B" League regular season action last summer scoring 27 runs in 27 games. He led the 10 team league in hits and was third in runs scored.

The talented left-handed hitter has had conversations with De Sales University and Lancaster Bible College as well as communications from Ohio University, Mount Olive College, the University of South Florida and Fordham University.

While Scala has yet to make any unofficial visits he does hope to do so during the winter months in addition to participating in the Pre-Season All-State Showcase in February. He has attended camps at Kent State University and Indiana University of PA and will return to the Class "B" League this summer to play for Rudzik Excavating and coach Tom Otto.
