Game Recap: West Mifflin vs. Blackhawk

Brendan McKayThe night began with a packed house eagerly anticipating having an opportunity to see 2014 LHP Brendan McKay chase history and quickly turned into an offensive explosion by Blackhawk that allowed them to advance to next week's Class 3A WPIAL championship game.

The 15-0 win assures the Cougars of a spot in the round of 16 when the PIAA state tournament begins on June 2. It also guarantees that McKay, who currently sits at No. 3 with 69 consecutive scoreless innings of baseball, will get at minimum of two more chances to extend his streak that spans over two seasons.

McKay is now well within reach of the No. 2 spot in the all-time national record book. With 3 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball in next week's WPIAL title game he will pass Mike Halperin (Naples Barron Collier, FL) into 2nd place on the list. Halperin compiled 72 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in 1991.

Assuming McKay tosses a seven inning shutout in the WPIAL title game he would still trail Joey Porter (South Natchez Adams, MS) by 4 innings. Porter tossed 80 consecutive innings of scoreless baseball in 1973. A shutout win in the title game would then give McKay an opportunity to set the record if he could set a first round state opponent down for four plus innings on June 2.

McKay was dominant again, tossing a four-inning no-hitter, and facing one batter over the minimum. The Louisville recruit and potential draft pick in the June amateur draft struck out seven in four innings and allowed just one base runner via an error with two outs in the 2nd.

Cody BainThe night however belonged to the Cougar's offense. Cody Bain (top right), who will play baseball and football next year for the US Coast Guard Academy, got the party started when he launched a three-run home run to left in the bottom of the 1st inning. 2015 3B Dante Parente (bottom right) added a grand slam in an eight run 2nd inning that pushed the Cougars' lead to 11-0. For good measure, senior 1B Chase Migliore and McKay when back-to-back with solo home runs in the 3rd inning to extend the lead to 14-0. McKay capped the night with a walk-off single to right field to plate the Dante Parente15th and final run of the evening in the run shortened game.

The night featured a no-hitter, a pitcher chasing a national record that has stood for 41 years, four home runs and a berth in the WPIAL finals for the Cougars. Almost lost in the fanfare was the fact that McKay, who may get an opportunity to be a two-way player if he ends up at Louisville, went 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a home run with six RBI.
