Game Recap: Devon Prep at The Haverford School

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The Haverford School 11, Devon Prep 9

Devon Prep RHP Zach Schellenger (#1 in PA 2014 class) was the headline act, but once he exited the game, the Fords offense stole the show on the way to a comeback victory at home. The visitors held a 7-0 lead through three and a half innings, but HS unloaded for eleven unanswered runs off the DP bullpen, and then held on as the Tide got the tying run on first base with one out and second base with two outs.

Devon Prep Scouting Notes

  • The half dozen scouts in attendance to see Schellenger did not leave disappointed, as he was plenty good for his first outing of the year (3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K). Working entirely from the stretch, the 6-foot-6, 195-pounder sat 88-90 with his FB, touching 91. The pitch has some armside action, although was mostly 1-plane due to an upright finish that didn't allow the Seton Hall commit to get to full extension and work completely downhill. Later in the outing, he did flash a couple FBs with some sink as well as run.

Schellenger's go-to pitch was a sharp 75-76 CB, with which he got a number of swing-throughs and used to finish off five of his strikeouts. He showed a feel for throwing it in the zone early in the count and as a chase pitch late. The second time through the order, he also mixed in a solid 77-79 CH that the bottom fell out of as it reached the plate.
  • 2015 3B Eric DiPietro was the offensive standout for the Tide, as the right-handed hitter lined three base hits to the opposite field. Given his status as 1st-team all-BAL for golf, it is probably safe to assume he doesn't have a proclivity to slice, so we will conclude that he did a nice job letting the ball travel and staying inside it. Despite committing a throwing error on a bunt, he showed solid actions and arm strength in pre-game.
  • 2016 DH Tony Gallo used the whole field to rack up his three hits, singles to left and center, and a double to right-center. He showed average foot speed (4.56 home-to-1B, 4.79 on a turn).
  • 2015 1B Sean Phelan put a number of quality swings on the ball, including driving a double into the right-field corner as Devon Prep tried to mount a seventh-inning comeback.
  • 2014 SS CJ Kohlbrenner picked up two singles, including a drag bunt during which he ran a 4.13 down the line.

The Haverford School Scouting Notes

  • McGowanLeft-handed hitting 2015 2B Kevin McGowan (right) appears to have eliminated some of the stiffness from his swing while still maintaining his gap power, driving a bases clearing double to left-center during the six-run bottom of the fourth. He also took a few quality swings against Schellenger earlier in the game. The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder posted a top home-to-1B time of 4.44 and ran a 4.65 on the turn for his double.
  • Two more young left-handed hitters -- 2016 Frank Cresta and 2017 Bryan Hyland -- both picked up pinch-hit RBI singles in the later innings. Cresta, whose 6-foot-1, 205-pound frame suggests potential for future power production, turned on a first-pitch FB and lined it into RF. Hyland showed a solid stroke for a frosh, lining a two-strike FB into CF for his knock.
  • 2016 C James McConnon, the starter as a freshman last season for the Fords, has done a nice job adding strength to his frame since last season. He worked hard defensively and picked up ground ball singles through both holes.
