Elite Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2018 Middle Infielders

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

The 2015 Elite Prospect Showcase took place Saturday, November 7th at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA with 75 prospects from four states displaying their skills. Today we continue our analysis of all prospects in attendance by reviewing middle infielders in the class of 2018.

Blackhawk second baseman Michael Turconi stood out for his across the board performance. Defensively, he exhibited good actions, a short arm action with quick release, and accurate 78-mph arm strength. The left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. He takes a short path to the baseball, works his hands inside, and minimizes excess head and body movement. He ran a 7.22 60-yard dash and has plenty of room to add strength to his 5-foot-9, 155-pound frame that, nonetheless, generated an 83-mph exit velocity.

Dale Houser, SS, Donegal
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 6.79 60-yard dash and logged an 82-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance and takes a waist-high leg lift that he doesn't always get back down on time. Barrel wrap creates some length in swing path. Defensively, he played with a little bounce in his step and showed an ability to make plays on the move. While he would benefit from fielding the ball further out front, his short arm action generated accurate throws of 78-mph across the diamond and currently profiles for the other side of the keystone at the next level.

Anthony Michalski, SS, Mars Area
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 7.07 60-yard dash and logged an 82-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance, rocks weight to backside, and strides to square. Swing has some length to it, but should shorten and get quicker as he adds strength to his frame. Defensively, he completed the slow roller play well and currently profiles best at second base due to a low throwing elbow and 76-mph arm strength.

Nick Parker, RHP/SS, Dallastown Area
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and logged an 85-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open, wide stance, rocks weight to backside and strides to square. Swing path can have a bit of length, but his approach is simple, he flashes some bat speed, hits through contact, and consistently barreled the ball throughout his BP round. Defensively, he showcased solid actions and, perhaps not surprisingly given his primary position, wound up with a pitcher's arm action to generate 86-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Travis Sankovich, SS, Laurel Highlands
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitter who ran a 7.22 60-yard dash and logged a 79-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance, rocks weight to backside with knee-to-knee stride to square. Tends to swing bat with body that floats forward during stride and swing has some length due to lack of physicality, but he certainly has time to add strength to his frame. Defensively is where Sankovich stood out, as he showed smooth actions with a soft glove hand, quick transfer, and the ability to throw from multiple arm angles with 76-mph arm strength.

Nick Serafino, 2B, Canon-McMillan
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 6.90 60-yard dash and logged an 85-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square, keeping his head quiet throughout the swing. Slightly uphill path with tendency to lose barrel at contact and not get to palm-up-palm-down position. Defensively, he exhibited solid feet and 71-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Adam Smith, SS, West Chester East
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 6.84 60-yard dash and logged an 82-mph exit velocity. Starts from an open stance and takes a slow, controlled leg kick to slightly closed. Eye level changes with stride, but he gets his hands to a good launch position and really lets them fly. Defensively, he completed the slow roller play well and utilized a clean, one-shuffle release with slingshot arm action and 77-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Paul Stowell, RHP/SS, St. Joseph's Prep
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter who did not run the 60-yard dash and logged an 83-mph exit velocity. Primary pitcher (who showed well on the mound) has some bat speed, but spins off the ball, not letting it travel into the zone and working underneath it. Defensively, he tended to field the ball deep and off his right hip, and employed a big wind-up and long arm action to generate 85-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Matt Ziminsky, RHP/SS, Whitehall
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter who ran a 7.65 60-yard dash and logged a 74-mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Primary pitcher (who showed well on the mound) has some length in his swing and wasn't always on time with his front foot. Defensively, he showed good feet and hands, along with 78-mph arm strength across the diamond.
