Conference Preview: WPIAL Class AAAA - Section 5

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

           WPIAL Class AAAA - Section 5

Preseason Favorites

Mt. Lebanon (9-9), Bethel Park (17-5), Peters Township (13-6)

The Blue Devils return All-Section RHP Zach Bahm along with LHP Robert Klinchock to give them a solid right-left combination at the top of the rotation. Bethel Park graduated 11 seniors, seven of which are now playing college baseball. Peters Township graduated nine seniors, but return 10 varsity players that saw action in at least 10 games each last year. Parity at the top should play itself out as the regular season winds into May but all three teams appear to have enough talent to contend for the section crown.

Zack BahmPreseason Player of the Year

Zack Bahm, RHP/1B (Class of 2014, Columbia recruit)

Bahm has been a mainstay in the Blue Devils pitching rotation for the past two years, going 5-2 as a junior with four complete games and two shutouts. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound All-Section selection is a Columbia University recruit battled an ankle injury much of the year but showed his offensive abilities once health driving in 10 runs and hitting two home runs in his final five games. Bahm hit .388 for the Steel City Wildcats this past summer while going 5-1 on the mound with a 0.83 ERA.
