Conference Preview: District 5 Class A

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

            district 5 Class A

Preseason Favorite

North Star (21-1), Meyersdale (20-4)

The two teams collided in the District 5 title game in 2013 and just may do so again this year. North Star will have to contend with the loss of Tony Strasiser (West Virginia) and Brantley Rice (Pitt-Johnston). Meyersdale will also have to contend with the loss of four starters from last year's 20 win ball club, but both teams have enough talent coming back to make a repeat match-up a likely scenario in 2014.

 

Preseason Player of the Year

Derek MullenDerek Mullen, North Star HS (Class of 2014)

Mullen had a breakout junior season for the Cougars hitting .405 with 39 RBI and 24 runs scored. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound left-handed hitter also swiped 9 bases, good for third on the team. Mullen helped lead North Star to the District 5 title and a 21 win season.
