When a physical, 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore posts a .500 batting average, .565 on-base percentage (with six walks against three strikeouts), and an .852 slugging percentage (including five home runs), while also chalking up 30 innings pitched with 14 hits, 14 walks, and 30 strikeouts in one of the top conferences in the state, it would be reasonable to assume he has a bright college future ahead of him. In the case of Council Rock North IF/RHP Brandon McIlwain, however, that future lies not on the diamond, but on the gridiron.
On December 31st, McIlwain announced his verbal commitment to the South Carolina Gamecocks football program. Per ESPN, McIlwain is the top recruit in his class in Pennsylvania, the #2 dual-threat quarterback in the county, and is ranked 51st overall in the 2016 ESPN Junior 300.
As a junior this past fall, McIlwain earned 1st-team all-league recognition for the third straight season. He finished the regular-season with 2,018 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns, along with 1,027 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Those numbers bring his career regular-season totals to 4,834 passing yards and 37 passing touchdowns, plus 2,336 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns.
This spring, McIlwain, who earned 2nd-team all-SOL Continental honors as a second baseman his freshman year and 1st-team honors as a first baseman last season, will look to lead the Indians back to the top of the conference following a second place finish in 2014.
