The Hotlist: Fastest 2015 Prospects

By Nathan Rode

The importance of speed has returned to baseball in recent years as the bats at the college level have changed and performance enhancers are less prevalent in professional baseball. According to the professional scouting scale, an above-average runner can run the 60-yard dash in 6.84 seconds or better. Using Prep Baseball Report’s advanced search function, we can find that there are at least 150 players that have recorded a 6.8-second 60 or better. Obviously, the list shrinks as you enter a more elite time with less than 100 running a 6.7 or better. There are 35 who have run a 6.6 or better while nine have run a 6.5. The fastest recorded time in PBR’s database is a 6.3, run by MIF/OF Javy Garcia (Pueblo West HS, CO). Listed alphabetically below are the fastest runners in the 2015 class.

Antonio Cullota, 2B/OF, Comeaux HS, LA
At 5-foot-9, 165-pounds, Cullota’s game revolves around athleticism and speed. Committed to Louisiana-Lafayette, he is an extremely gifted and fast-twitch athlete. He runs the 60 in the high 6.4 to low 6.5 range. Hitting from the right side, he consistently gets down the line at an eye-opening 4.0-4.1 seconds. He is a quality defender and can play in the center of diamond. Whether it will be in the infield or outfield is yet to be determined. He will need to gain some strength as hitter as he advances in the game, but he has game-changing speed and athleticism.
