Ontario Top Ten Breakdown: Top Viewed Prospect Profiles - #6 Sam Turcotte
#6 Sam Turcotte, RHP, 2016
Background: The sixth most viewed profile in our countdown is 2016 pitching prospect and Stony Brook commit Sam Turcotte. Turcotte excelled over 2015 as a member of the Ontario Terriers and Team Canada Junior National Team. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-hander has the size and strength to be a workhorse and potential front off the rotation stuff at the next level. Mechanically, Turcotte involves his lower half well into his delivery and shows that he can repeat his actions. The arm is clean and works from a ¾ arm slot and he should still be able to add strength to his frame as he continues to mature.
The Arsenal: Armed with a fastball that has been up to 90 mph, Turcotte displays good downhill action on his pitches, and induces a lot of weak contact and swings and misses on his fastball. The changeup has become an improved pitch that he has shown better command and feel for as of late, with it hovering around 76-78 mph. The curveball is at best when he is on top and out-front with 11/5 shape and late biting action. It can become a potential out pitch as he continues to become more comfortable and consistent with it as he throws it around the low-70s.
Outlook: As Turcotte heads into his last year of summer ball in 2015, he will look to make a big push and hope to attract the attention of pro scouts in hopes of hearing his name called this June. As mentioned, the 6-foot-5 righty is signed with Stony Brook of the American East Conference and would look to play a role as a freshman with the Seawolves. Sam will be the ace of the Terriers this summer as well an important piece of the National Team as one of the veteran arms on the staff, leading the way for the new and younger arms on the team.
