2017 PBR Draft 100: Most Commitments

By Nathan Rode

Last week, we broke down the Overall Rankings and PBR Draft 100 by commitments—looking at how many prospects were committed to Division I schools, what conferences were represented and whether the players would be staying in state or moving out. To highlight the work college recruiters do, we’re now taking a look at which schools have the most recruits. First up is the PBR Draft 100. There are 42 schools represented on the list and three tied for the most with six—Miami, Southern California and Texas Christian. While having several PBR Draft 100 recruits certainly represents a strong class, they have to make it to campus to have impact. To be sure, the schools listed in this exercise will be anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the 2017 MLB Draft in June and subsequent signing deadline.

MIAMI
Recruits: 6
The Hurricanes have been to the last two College World Series and the NCAA Tournament every year since 1973. Like other great programs, they don’t rebuild. They reload. Miami had four recruits in the 2016 PBR Draft 100 and two of them made it to campus. If it can get even half of its current recruiting class to forgo signing out of the draft, that postseason streak will hardly be in danger. Three of the top prospects in Florida are committed to the Hurricanes with a dual threat currently sitting at the top. 3B/RHP Joe Perez (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL) performed well with the bat all summer, but also has flashed a mid-90s fastball on the mound. SS Mark Vientos (American Heritage HS, FL) was once considered the top prospect in the country. While he’s been inconsistent lately, he still has excellent upside and is young for the class. 1B Alex Toral (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL) has been inconsistent as well, but his left-handed power is hard to overlook. SS Jeter Downs (Pace HS, F) enjoyed a breakout summer, as did RHP Chris McMahon (West Chester Rustin HS, PA). RHP Robert Touron (Gulliver Prep, FL) has a live arm that produces a low-90s fastball from a lower slot. It’s a strong class for the Hurricanes, who will likely be sweating until the 2017 Draft concludes.
