McDonough has been considered one of Ohio’s top catchers since early in his high school career. He verbally committed to Ohio State as a sophomore and then was selected for the East Coast Pro Showcase, an event made up of mostly seniors, as a rising junior. During his junior year, McDonough was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease and missed the 2013 season. After nearly a year of treatments, he is healthy and has returned to school and his training. He is regarded for his catch-and-throw skills and has shown an ability to handle the bat.
