Q and A with 2014 West Virginia Commit: Caleb Ferguson (West Jefferson HS)
June 18, 2013
Caleb Ferguson, LHP, West Jefferson HS, Class of 2014
PBR: Why did you choose West Virginia?
Ferguson: I chose WVU because I feel like the coaching staff has a lot to offer and I like their philosophy. Being their first year, they had a great first season and I think they are going to build on that. WVU also has great facilities and solid academics and lots of majors to choose from. I have to say the scholarship also helped me choose them of course!
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Ferguson: Over the past several months I have been in contact with OSU, Coastal Carolina, UC, Toledo, Indiana and Wright State. Recently after appearing in PBR top prospect showcase and East Coast Pro I was contacted by MSU, OU, EMU and Louisville.
PBR: Where did the West Virginia coaches first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Ferguson: WVU first saw me pitch at one of my high school games after one of my coaches who happens to be a HUGE WVU fan contacted them to tell them about me. They kept in very close contact with me through my school season and as soon as our season ended I made an unofficial visit to see the university. They also saw me at PBR events after that.
PBR: West Virginia is currently playing in the Big 12. How much of an affect did that have on your decision?
Ferguson: The Big 12 is a good baseball conference and I will get to play some big schools in the south that will help me improve my game, and hopefully be seen by pro scouts that haven't already seen me.
PBR: You recently attended PBR’s Top Prospect Showcase. How did that help you in the recruiting process?
Ferguson: Well, since I was there I have heard from several big schools that I had never heard from before, and some that I had not heard from in awhile. It definitely sparked some interest in me.
PBR: West Virginia is in the early stages of building a new stadium. How does it feel to know that you will be one of the first recruiting classes to play on the field?
Ferguson: It is pretty exciting. I have been to the site of the future stadium and it is going to be amazing.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Ferguson: They expect me to work to my full potential and hopefully be a starter but to develop as pitcher in whatever way I am needed to benefit my team.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Ferguson: Well, I didn't expect it to be so stressful. There are so many things to consider. once I visited WVU it just felt right to me and my parents. I am glad I have made the decision so now I can concentrate on my game when I am on the mound and not worry so much about who may be watching from the stands.
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?
Ferguson: Ronnie Dawson
