PBR Spotlight Game: Sherwood Fairview vs Tontogony Otsego

SHERWOOD – Runs were at a premium as two outstanding pitcher dueled-off against eachother, with the winner claiming a D-III Sectional Championship.

Senior Joe Macsay (pictured left) and 2016 RHP Hunter Carson (pictured right) matched each other pitch-for-pitch on Thursday, combining for 16 strikeouts while allowing just one run (in the bottom of the 1st inning).

In the bottom of the 1st, senior catcher Brett Dietrich led the frame off with a single that hit the lip of the grass at third and bounced high into the air over Otsego's third baseman. Dietrich advanced to second on a groundout, bringing to the plate senior leader Andy Robinson.

Robinson promptly blooped a single over the first baseman's head allowing Dietrich to score from second, giving the Apaches an early 1-0 lead.

That was all Macsay needed as Otsego was only able to threaten in the 6th inning when the Knights loaded the bases.

In the 6th for the Knights, Dakota Maher reached via the walk, but was picked off at first which would prove costly for Otsego.

After a strikeout, a walk to Joe Brown, single by Carson and HBP by Jon Brown the stage was set for freshman infielder Lance Sniegowski who laced the first pitch in the at bat to center. However Fairview's sophomore centerfielder Kobe Baker ran the ball down to get the Apaches out of it.

Fairview skipper Andy Singer on Macsay's performance...

"He get behind more batters than we would normally like to see but he was able to come back with that third strike or at least able to make them hit it or do something with it ... He got stronger as the game went on."

Otsego head coach Chase Welker on Macsay...

"He didn't put any guys on, he commanded and controlled the game the whole time ... He went out threw a complete game and only allowed three hits, so you have to tip your cap to him ... His control, he was able to locate his pitches both inside and outside, he threw his offspeed for strike."

Otsego mentor Chase Welker on Carson's perfomance...

"They that one early on some questionable hits (softly hit balls), but a hit is a hit ... He (Hunter) battled and kept us in the game."

After the 1-0 victory for the Apaches, Fairview will face #14 Genoa who defeated Liberty Center 3-0 to capture their own sectional title.

The Comets and Apaches will actually face-off for the third straight year in the postseason on Thursday in Defiance at Booster Field around 4:15 p.m. The nightcap will feature Lake and Evergreen.

Otsego bows out with a 10-14 record on the year, but 2016 looks promising for the Knights as they are loaded with talented underclassmen that got varsity experience this season while also having some up and comers that look to add to what the Knights already have.

"Yeah we are young and I think this experience of being in these types of games is good for those young guys," stated Welker. "Even though we come up short and have to walk away with the loss, them being a part of this and seeing some good baseball will definitely help them come next year ... I am happy with our prospects next year."
