PBR Spotlight Game: #2 Wadsworth vs #3 Walsh Jesuit
Hudson – In the championship game of the Division I Hudson district #2 ranked Wadsworth took on #3 ranked Walsh Jesuit. Despite an early deficit and some seventh inning drama the Warriors held on for a 5-4 victory giving the Grizzlies their only loss on the season.
Early on it appeared defensive miscues and base running blunders would prevent Walsh Jesuit from knocking off previously unbeaten Wadsworth.
Senior left handed pitcher Ty Shoaff (a Missouri commit) was cruising until a costly error with two outs allowed the Grizzlies to keep the third inning going. Back-to-back singles by unsigned senior Jared Houser and sophomore catcher Craig Palidar put Wadsworth up 2-0.
The Grizzlies starting pitcher – junior right-hander Cameron Deemer shut the Walsh bats down the first three innings allowing one hit while striking out three.
However, the Warriors would cut the Wadsworth lead in half in the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Brendan Regan. Regan knocked home unsigned senior Nick DeLeone who was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning.
Walsh Jesuit would end Deemers day in the fifth inning following senior third baseman Dominic Mittiga's second hit of the day. The single by Mittiga (a John Carroll commit) scored senior catcher Connor Regan (a Buffalo commit). Deemer gave way to junior right-hander Chris Byers. The Warriors would score a total of two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the seventh inning. Senior outfielder and Bowling Green commit Blake Jenkins got things going with his second hit of the day. A single by Regan, a double by DeLeone and a triple by Mittiga would put the Warriors up 5-2.
However, the game was far from over.
The Warriors called on Ohio State commit Dominic Canzone to close things out. The junior right-hander gave up a leadoff triple to Toledo commit Riley Campbell. He would strike out the next batter before walking three straight, cutting the Warrior lead to 5-3.
Walsh Jesuit went to the bullpen again, this time calling on senior side-armer Shane Downey.
Downey induced a ground ball on the first batter he faced making the score 5-4. With two outs and runners on first and second Downey got Alex Laikos to ground out to end the game.
With the win, Walsh Jesuit won the Hudson district and moves on to the sweet 16. They improve to 25-3 on the year and will face defending state champions Massillon Jackson on Thursday May 28th at 2:00pm at Thurman Munson Stadium.
The loss by Wadsworth ends a tremendous season and they finish 26-1.
