Ohio Insider: Top 2017 Uncommitted Pitchers

With the Summer season coming to an end and the 2016-2017 high school sports season as well as fall ball getting underway, we would like to take a look at some of the top uncommitted prospects at each position.

Today we are starting with the top uncommitted senior pitchers in Ohio. We will look to create a few top uncommitted lists each week, as you can see by our 2017 Player Rankings there are numerous talented prospects available.

Jake Schrand, RHP, Colerain
Ranked: 19th in Ohio’s 2017 Class
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic frame. The thing that stands out about Schrand other than an upper-80s to 90 mph fastball is his demeanor on the mound. Jake has obvious confidence in his ability on the mound with the competitiveness to go right at hitters. Has looseness to his arm while working through a high-¾ slot with obvious armspeed. His offspeed will need to continue to develop but curveball showed some sharpness at 69-70 mph and changeup is playable.
College Outlook: Right now his stuff plays at the next level, especially his velocity. All signs point to him being a weekend guy at some point in his career. How his secondary stuff develops will most likely determine how early that happens.

Max Schreiber, RHP, Sparta Highland
Ranked: 44th in Ohio’s 2017 Class
Scouting Report: 6-foot-4, 175-pound projectable frame. Somewhat raw mechanically on the mound but the upside is there. Delivery requires regular effort. Tilts his shoulders for leverage and works through an over the top slot with above average armspeed. Pounded the zone with his 84-87 mph fastball. His velocity has steadily increased each time we’ve seen and that trend should continue with his frame and relatively clean arm action. His best offspeed pitch is his 12/6 curveball that he throws hard at 71-74 mph. Hitters had a tough time picking up the spin on the pitch. Changeup is playable but still developing.
College Outlook: He has a really good fastball/curveball combination but the effort in the delivery and his changeup not being quite there yet would point towards him coming out of the pen at the next level. However, if he proves he can hold velocity and changeup develops he could slide into a college rotation.

Logan Sabo, LHP, Moeller
Ranked: 47th in Ohio’s 2017 Class
Scouting Report: 6-foot-1, 175-pound athletic frame. Has smooth rhythm to his delivery that requires some effort. Works through a high ¾ slot with average armspeed. Has feel for all three of his pitches. Fastball has natural run to it at 83-85 mph. Curveball is sharp with a 1/7 shape at 71-73 mph. Was able to throw the pitch for a strike or as a chase pitch. Changeup is a solid pitch that has similar action to his fastball.
College Outlook: He won’t overwhelm you with velocity but has enough juice behind it to be effective. His curveball is good enough to give lefties fits and his changeup allows him to get righties out consistently as well. Right now he profiles as a starter at the next level.
Interest: Longwood, Eastern Michigan, Ohio University, Eastern Kentucky

Collin Clark, LHP, Logan Elm
Ranked: 48th in Ohio’s 2017 Class
Scouting Report: 6-foot-3, 180-pound with an ideal frame for a pitcher. Is as projectable as they come with his frame and above average athleticism. Has some rhythm to his delivery. Arm has obvious looseness to it with above average armspeed. Fastball was 80-85 mph with some run to it. Has much more in there as he fills out and cleans up his lower half. Curveball shows sharpness to it but was inconsistent with locating the pitch. Change up shows signs of being an above average pitch as he continues to develop feel. Very intriguing prospect that could become elite if he takes the next step.
College Outlook: One of the more intriguing prospects in the 2017 class. He has all the physical tools to make him a top level arm but hasn’t taken the next step to separate himself from the pack. If he reaches his full potential he is a top 10 talent in the class.
Interest: Wright State, Cincinnati, Ohio University

Dalton Earich, RHP, Manchester
Ranked: 53rd in Ohio’s 2017 Class
Scouting Report: 6-foot-2, 175-pound athletic, projectable frame. The right-hander varies his tempo in his delivery to create deception for the hitter. Has short, quick arm action and works through a high ¾. Doesn’t throw anything straight. Uses primarily a two-seam fastball that has heavy run into righties. Fastball sits 84-85 mph and has been up to 86 mph. Curveball is sharp, with good depth and an 11/5 shape. Changeup has similar run to his fastball and he is able to maintain his armspeed. Has feel for all three pitches.
College Outlook: With the movement on his fastball and feel for his secondary stuff he could fit just about any role on the mound. Best guess at this stage is a long reliever early in his career that makes his way into the rotation at some point.
