The history
The 2014 roster featured 20 players that have since gone on to commit to a college program. Three participants (Jake Vance, Michael McDonough, and Noah West) were selected to Team Ohio for the Futures Games and all later committed to The Ohio State University.
- The arms are highlighted by a pair of southpaws in Edison 2015 LHP Adam Wolf (Louisville recruit), and Crestview Local 2016 LHP Michael McDonough (Ohio State recruit).
- Not to be over shadowed, Marlington 2015 RHP Brock Balderson (Butler recruit), Canton Central Catholic 2016 RHP Jake Vance (Ohio State recruit) put together solid performances.
- The event provided our first opportunity to see speedy middle infielder Riley Campbell, who later participated in the Top Prospect Games and committed to Toledo.
- Meanwhile, Westerville Central 2016 IF Noah West (Ohio State recruit) showed steady improvement that helped land him a spot on the Futures Game roster for Team Ohio.
- Van Buren 2015 OF Ross Adolph (Toledo recruit) put himself on the map and earned an invitation to the Top Prospect Game with a stellar performance while Mt. Vernon 2015 OF JD Orr displayed top end speed with a 6.65 60.
- A trio of catchers committed to college programs, including North Canton Hoover's Sam Russo (Butler recruit), Uniontown Lake's Dalton Davis (Lake Erie recruit), and Archbishop Hoban's Jordan Burns (Lake Erie recruit). To see the complete results, click here.
The 2013 roster featured 25 players that have since gone on to commit to a college program. Of those 25 players, one was selected to play for Team Ohio in the Futures Games. Just over a year later, Midview IF/RHP Cody Callaway was selected in the MLB draft by the hometown Cleveland Indians.
- West Holmes 2014 southpaw Butch Baird committed to Louisville shortly after the event.
- 2014 IF/OF Tyler Gullet (Toledo recruit), who transferred from St. Edward to Keystone just prior to the event, put together a strong performance that was a precursor to a highly successful high school career.
- Just a freshman at the time, Canton Central Catholic's Jake Vance (Ohio State recruit) put himself on the map as one of the top players in Ohio’s Class of 2016.
- Midview 2014 IF/RHP Cody Callaway (Bowling Green recruit) , a standout two-sport athlete, showed well in multiple areas.
- Orrville 2014 1B/3B Stuart Schley put together a strong performance leading to a TPG invitation and later a commitment to West Point.
- Keystone 2014 OF/RHP Marcus Gunter (Mercyhurst NE recruit) and Elyria Catholic 2014 OF/IF Jacob Csizmadia (Lake Erie recruit) shows an abundance of athleticism and tools.
- A pair of Northeast Ohio right-handed pitchers, Lakeview's David LeMasters (Lake Erie) and Manchester's Chander Stahl (Malone), lit up the radar guns.
- Canton South 2015 C/IF Conner Thomson (UNC Charlotte) showed as one of the top player's in his class, earning an invitation to the Top Prospect Games and Future Games.
- Meanwhile, Oregon Clay IF Ryan Fournier (Xavier recruit) and Revere OF Sam Sustersic (Dayton recruit) hit our radar for the first time with strong performances in the field and at the plate. To view the complete results, click here.
SCOUTING NOTES FROM 2014
For now, we take you back to a few of our scouting notes from last year's event ...
+ Adam Wolf, 6-5, 210, L/L, Edison HS, 2015
Wolf has quickly elevated himself as one of the top southpaws in Ohio's Class of 2015. The tall, lanky lefty has made big strides as he continues to grow into his body and develop repeatability in his delivery. On this occasion, Wolf showed command of three pitches. He throws with a high 3/4 arm slot with some choppiness to his delivery. His fastball had some sinking movement at 83-86 mph. Curveball showed good gradual mostly downward break at 70-72 mph. Also, threw a 75-76 mph changeup at fastball arm speed.
+ Michael McDonough, LHP, 6-0, 150, L/L, Crestview Local HS, 2016
This was the young lefty's first appearance at a PBR showcase. He throws with some quickness through a high 3/4 arm slot with long arm action. At this stage, he shows a great deal of potential, but needs to continue developing repeatability. His delivery requires some effort and he has some front side issues that effect his command. His fastball showed good natural cutting action at 81-84 mph. His breaking ball showed 1/7 action at 71-72 mph but tended to be a bit erratic. Also displayed a 68-69 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. Definite follow.
+ Riley Campbell, SS, 5-9, 170, R/R, Wadsworth HS, 2015
Measureables: 84 mph exit velo, 80 mph, 6.66 60
This was our first time seeing Campbell, and he impressed. In a year without an abundance of middle infield prospects in Ohio, he should find his services in high demand. His foot speed is obvious given his 6.66 60. But, it transfers over to the field as he displays good range and natural actions from the short stop position. The biggest knock on his defensive skill set would be his arm action, but even with that he shows good carry and a top velocity of 80 mph with long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot. His skill set could also give him the versatility to play the out field as well. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in an athletic stance. He shows good balance and creates momentum through the baseball with his lower half. His hands work well through the zone on a slight uphill path. He consistently drove the ball up the middle with solid contact. His top exit velocity registered at 84 mph.
+ Ross Adolph, OF, 6-1, 195, L/R, Van Buren HS, 2015
Measureables: 84 mph exit velo, 79 mph, 7.00 60
Adolph put himself on the map with this event. Relatively unknown at this stage, Adolph is one of the hidden gems tucked away in Northwest Ohio. You won't find him on the travel circuit as he plays legion baseball. The left-handed hitter has a big time swing. Starting in an athletic stance, he uses an explosive lower half. His hands stay through the zone and he consistently gets extension. He showed a fluid rhythm as the ball jumped off his bat to all fields. With big time power, he should become one of Ohio's top recruited power bats in the Class of 2015. At this stage, he projects as a corner outfielder. His arm is playable, but likely positions him best in left field. He showed good foot speed, but pending his college destination, he could potentially make the shift to first base as well.
