COLUMBUS - Austin Taylor drove in Shay Smiddy with the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Defiance a 3-2 win over Hamilton Badin in the Division II state title game on Saturday at Huntington Park, the third state championship in four years for the Bulldogs.
Smiddy was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth and moved up on a Braden Frederick sac bunt. After a walk to Connor Stykemain, Charlie Gordon loaded the bases with an infield single in the hole at short. Following pop out, Taylor delivered for the 29-2 top-ranked Bulldogs.
Defiance had gone in front 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Frederick doubled and came home on a two-out single by Jacob Jimenez.
However, Badin (22-12) tied it up in the seventh on a Ross Mulcare double and run-scoring single by Mitchell Raley.
Jimenez led Defiance with two singles while Mulcare had a pair of doubles for Badin and Garrett Hogan two singles.
Defiance has now won four state titles, 1992, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
