Webster Schroeder 2 - Webster Thomas 1

Webster Schroeder takes down cross-town rival Webster Thomas, as they improve to 13-2.

On the Mound
Junior RHP Nick Lawlor went the distance for the Warriors allowing just 4 hits.  He pounded the zone, pitching to contact all game long, and used all of his pitches effectively to keep the Titans off balance.  He finished with 7 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, and 2 k’s.

Thomas senior Jimmy Dawson also pitched into the 7th allowing 2 ER while striking out 6.  He was without his usual superb command on this day.  As with all good pitchers he found a way to battle through without his best stuff to keep the Titans in the game.

At the Plate
In a game with very limited offense, Junior Mike Laloggia was the star as he hit a walk-off single for the Warriors in the bottom of the 7th to score Matt Bonafede.

PBR’s Take
The Warriors continue to impress as they find ways to win the close games.  Not a team with the biggest names in Section V, but they work very well as a unit.  Their pitchers all throw strikes and allow a very solid defense to make plays behind them.

The Titans, although slipping in the standings a bit, have a good of shot as anyone in Sectionals with top tier starting pitchers.  Section V is wide open, and regardless of the standings, it’s a new season once Sectionals start.

Fairport 5 - Penfield 2 (11 innings)

It was Coaches vs. Cancer night at Penfield’s Bachman field, and those who came out were not disappointed.  This classic Section 5 matchup on a perfect evening featured a little bit of everything; a very large crowd, terrific defense, solid pitching, questionable umpiring calls, bloops, liners, double plays of all kinds, and much more!

It was a sacrifice fly by junior Jake Rugaber scoring junior Connor Ewing that finally put the Red Raiders ahead for good in the top of the 11th.  They would add 2 additional insurance runs and go on to win a thriller by a score of 5-2.  Senior Andy Reed earned the save with a 1-2-3 11th.

On the Mound
Fairport starter Matt Johnson threw 6 solid innings allowing 2 R, 2 H, 4 BB, while punching out 6 Patriots.  The Red Raiders bullpen was spectacular tossing 5 shutout innings.  Senior Jeff Waldrup turned in 3 2/3 innings, while senior Sam Weber closed out the 10th retiring 1 batter. Senior Andy Reed nailed it down in the 11th to earn the save with two K’s.

Penfield sophomore Ryan Kalbfus was equal to the task, leaving in with a 2-1 lead the 6th with runners on 1st and 3rd.  Senior Jackson Smith and Jake Hewitt both turned in quality relief appearances for the Patriots.

At the Plate
Fairport opened the scoring in the 2nd as senior James Jackson doubled and would later score on an error.  Penfield would tie the game in the 4th before taking the lead in the 5th.  Senior Sam Vercruysse led off the 6th with a single and was pinch run for by junior Tony Argento, who promptly stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a wild pitch to put Penfield up 2-1.

Fairport tied the game at 2 in the 6th.  After James Jackson reached on a HBP, Waldrup singled off the pitcher.  Connor Ewing was intentionally walked to load the bases after which junior Sam Guelli drew a walk to force in a run.

There would be no more scoring until the 11th when Jake Rugaber drove in Connor Ewing with a sac fly with the eventual game winner.

PBR’s Take
It was a great game, and it was awesome to see such a large crowd, the atmosphere was electric.  Both teams had numerous opportunities to score, but each team was robbed of the chance to take the lead by the opponent’s defense.  It was fun to watch.

In a game with a lot of terrific plays, Fairport SS Sam Gueli (2016) stood out.  The first year varsity infielder made 3 tremendous plays along with making all of the routine plays with ease.  He has good range, strong instincts, and a plus, accurate arm.  Of the shortstops in Section 5 Gueli has been in the top 2 that we have seen.
