Shenendehowa 1 - Guilderland 0 |
The Siena and Vanderbilt commits Matthew Pierce and Ian Anderson squared off for the first time this year,in what was hyped as being the best pitching match-up of the season. When it was all said and done, both pitchers didn't disappoint.
In the 1-0 win Anderson and the Shen ball club gave up only 1 hit through 7 innings, striking out 14. The sole hit for Guilderland, a two out double by Matt Schiller in the top of the 7th.
Guilderland starting pitcher Matthew Pierce was tough all day on the Plainsmen hitters. Although he scattered 10 hits, he struck out 8 and didn't allow a single walk. It seemed as if the tougher the situation, the tougher Pierce got.
In a late game 2 out rally, Shenendehowa scored their only run on an RBI single in the 6th by Andrew Pedone.
Shen improved to 11-0 in league play and 11-2 overall.
Guilderland drops to 7-3 in league play and 9-5 overall.
PBR's take
Guilderland is a tough, scrappy, energetic, well coached team. Against almost any other pitcher, Pierce did enough to win the game. He's not terribly over powering, but he's able to throw breaking balls for strikes, work corners, and keep hitters off balance. They are a fun team to watch, and although they lost some games early, look for them to make a deep post-season run.
Shenendehowa is just tough, and Anderson is dominant. He had his way with a very good HS hitting team last night, with a high octane fastball, and curve balls for strikes. A D1 coach told me three weeks ago that Anderson (2016) would be the ace on his staff right now. After seeing him three times, I believe him.
