Coming off a 10-0 sophomore season in which he led Rye to the Class A state title game, hard-throwing right-hander George Kirby tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the Garnets season-opening 4-0 win over Tappan Zee on Friday. Relying heavily on his fastball, Kirby had his way with the Dutchmen lineup. He walked one and threw 68 of his 98 pitches for strikes. The junior is orally committed to Elon.

Tappan Zee (3-2) countered with junior right-hander John Daly, who matched Kirby with zeros in each of the first four innings, despite putting a runner on third with less than two outs in the second and the fourth. Rye broke through in the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Tim DeGraw and Tim Hale with one out sparked the rally, with DeGraw scoring when Hale’s single was bobbled in center field. Hale scored on the Dutchmen’s second error, and then Mat Bruno made it 3-0 with an RBI single. The fourth run scored when Ryan Ciardiello singled and stole second, opening the door for Bruno to scoot home.

Daly allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings with three strikeouts. Bruno went 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored and the RBI single. DeGraw went 2 for 3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Kiernan Gibson, Bryan Borruso and James Russo had the hits for TZ.
