Rye 4 - John Jay 3

After taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning on Thursday, Rye junior ace George Kirby was pulled to start the sixth because of an escalating pitch count. The Garnets had a two-run lead at the time, but the bullpen allowed John Jay to tie the score. Rye retook the lead on a bases-loaded balk in the top of the seventh and then Ryan Anderson nailed down the final three outs for a 4-3 win over the host.

Kirby struck out nine over five innings without allowing an earned run. He gave up one hit and two walks on 96 pitches (61 strikes). Three errors behind him helped drive up his pitch count, but he didn’t allow a hit until Virginia-bound senior Jack Weiller’s infield single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. An error on the previous play extended the inning.

Kirby was replaced by knuckleballer Keith Secon to begin the sixth, who promptly gave up singles to Jared Kersh and Justin Drpich. Anderson came onto replace Secon with two men on and no outs, allowing a sac fly to C.J. McCarthy and a pinch-hit RBI single to Matt Hegarty to tie the score. He ended the inning with a strikeout, and after Rye took the lead in the seventh, Anderson closed out the game by retiring John Jay’s 2-3-4 hitters in order, including two strikeouts.

The Garnets (3-0) jumped on John Jay starter Chase Borowitz early. Tim DeGraw led off the game with a single and a stolen base, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Tim Hale walked and they both came home on Chase Pratt’s two-run double to put Rye up 2-0. Pratt ended up going 3 for 3 with a double, a homer and three RBI.

Borowitz settled down after the first, pitching 6 2/3 innings while allowing four earned runs on six hits, two walks and one hit batsman. The right-hander struck out five on 90 pitches (51 strikes). He was replaced by Alex Kohlhagen, who intentionally walked DeGraw to load the bases with two outs and then balked in the winning run. The loss dropped the Indians to 1-5.
