Davis Payne, 1B, Christian Brothers Academy (Albany), NY (2017)
Payne stands 6-foot-4, 205-pounds with incredible size and projection at the corner. At first-base he fields the ball out in front of his body, uses good footwork for his size lining up with his target, clean arm action, throws from a high-3/4 slot, infield arm strength at 68 mph. Velocity projection with maturity. At the plate he has next level tools. His setup is relaxed and upright. On the pitch he loads back, powers his hands inside the ball (85 mph exit velo), level through the zone, short path. Long extension out in front with a high balanced finish, power potential is there.
Analysis:
Coming out of the class of 2017, Payne shows a lot of potential from the left side of the plate. As a sophomore he has tremendous pop with a compact relaxed swing resulting in 85 mph exit velocity. He has a tendency to let his hands cast out in front of his body, but with some off-season work building that lower half you can expect his offensive numbers to escalate tremendously. At first-base, Payne shows good athleticism for his size and fields the ball out in front of his body with soft hands and a quick release. With the proper work ethic over the next couple years, you can expect big numbers out of this young CBA standout. Looking forward to seeing him in February at our Preseason All-State invite only event.
