Orchard Park 2 - St. Francis 1 |
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Bob Barrows Field in Orchard Park the stage was set for a big upset when St. Francis came in to try to knock off the unbeaten Quakers. The Red Raiders senior ace Mike Deleo took the mound opposite junior Jacob Lewis for the Quakers. The two squared off in a phenomenal pitchers dual all afternoon, each throwing a complete game.
In the top of the 2nd senior Nick Ferrino drove a ball deep to left but was robbed of a double when Senior Mark Lauria made a tremendous catch in full stride in left. Lauria then fired up the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle and was then driven in by Junior center fielder Jake Woodrich when Woodrich drove a ball deep in the gap and was able to stretch it to an RBI triple.
For the next few frames Deleo and Lewis just went to work and began shutting opposing hitters down 1-2-3. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the 5th when Wagner led off the inning with a double for the Red Raiders. Freshman Catcher Ty Syta was then HBP to put runners on first and second. Ferrino bunted them over. Next, Bryan Zurowski drove in Wagner on a SAC fly. Lewis however was able to battle out of a tough jam in the 5th only allowing that one run. Heading into the 7th inning it looked as though the game was going to head into extra innings and be decided by the bullpen as each starting pitcher was staying strong and not giving much to hit. However, Senior Mark Lauria who has had the hot bat as of late for the Quakers, led off the 7th with a double. After a passed ball pushed Lauria to 3rd, the Red Raiders put the next two batters on, loading the bases for senior NCCC commit Brandon Nicholson. Nicholson wasted no time taking the first pitch he saw deep to center to knock in the winning run.
St. Francis certainly has nothing to hang their heads about. They were able to put a scare into the #1 ranked Quakers thanks to a fantastic performance on the mound by Mike Deleo. However, their hitters just could not string much together off of Lewis who had good stuff working today on the mound. Lewis showed good command of all 3 pitches and was able to go a complete game with very limited pitch count. Both his command and velocity have jumped since the first time we saw him early in the year. The Quakers will likely remain #1 until someone is able to knock them off which has proven to be a tough task for anyone this season. The Red Raiders show a lot of good signs however, and should give anyone in run for their money in western New York.
