Orchard Park 19 - Hamburg 13 |
In non-conference play Class A Hamburg took on Class AA Orchard Park. On a day of high winds and tough fly balls both teams showed their strengths and why they’ll each be teams to reckon with in their respective divisions. Junior RHP Jacob Lewis took the mound for OP while Junior RHP Sean Filas got the nod for Hamburg. Lewis led the way throwing 3 solid innings before the Quakers went to the pen for a committee finish. In his outing however, Lewis looked solid and showed command of three pitches. His funky delivery and ¾ arm action creates solid arm side run and sink that when controlled showed to be very tough to hit.
On the offensive side Orchard Park was led by the explosive bat of Junior third baseman Jeff Palczewski who was 4-4 with two triples, a double, SAC Fly, and 5RBI’s. Junior Centerfielder Jake Woodrich also had a big day on the base paths. Though the scorebook only shows 1-5 Woodrich reached base 4 times, stole two bags, drove in 3 runs and scored 4 more. He showed tremendous speed on the bases, multiple times causing infielders to rush throws, in turn leading to runs and extra bases. The Orchard Park offensive explosion was certainly a team effort with hits coming from Senior Mark Lauria who is committed to play next year at Messiah College. Middle Infielders Austin Bristol Troy Banks each added hits in the effort along with sophomore outfielder Cole Hollins. Orchard Park showed signs of a great team in their ability to capitalize on any mistake Hamburg may have made.
Despite coming up short in the end, Hamburg did not shy away from the challenge of facing one of the toughest teams in New York State. They too had an onslaught of hits throughout the game which ended up accounting for 13 runs. Junior third baseman Griff Demayo was 3-5 with a double, RBI, and 2 runs scored; Senior Binghamton University commit Cameron Ringo was 2-4 with a walk 2 runs and an RBI, Senior Catcher David Edie went 3-5 with a triple driven deep to the right center gap and Senior Outfielder Jacob Mertowski went 2-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and an RBI in the 13 run effort.
All in all an exciting day for these two teams to square off for the first time back in Western New York after their southern trips. Hamburg though a little thin in pitching this year should still have a shot to make a solid run as long as their bats stay hot. The top 4 in their lineup proved they can swing it with the best of them. Orchard Park showed why they are a top ranked team in New York State in 2015. They showed strong at the plate 1-9 and hardly needed to tap into their deep pitching staff today at all. Each team has some strong young talent for college coaches to keep an eye on this spring and summer. It will not surprise anyone if these two end up at the top of their divisions at the end of the year.
