No. 1 Shenendehowa Vs. Saratoga: Game Recap

In conditions less-than-favorable for any baseball game, Saratoga Springs High School took on the Class AA 2014 State runner-up Shenendehowa High School. The game that was supposed to be a home game for Saratoga, was moved because of field conditions. This was fans and scouts first look in 2015 at Vanderbilt Commit, RHP Ian Anderson.  With all the hype surrounding the tall, hard-throwing RHP this off-season, he certainly didn't disappoint.

In the top of the first, Saratoga would be the first to threaten. With two outs, Danny Colemen would single to left bringing Jake Fauler (reached on an eight pitch walk) into scoring position. Anderson would buckle down and record the strike out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second Shen would get on the board. After Toga starting pitcher Jack Herman got Shen first basemen Mike Jeffers to fly out to right field, Senior catcher (Brad Pearson) would work a walk after being down 0-2.  (Frankie Pizzo) would then be hit by a pitch bringing runners to first and second. On the following pitch, (Alex Levigne) would double to center to bring in (Pearson).  Herman was able to buckle down and record a strike out and a fly out, to strand Pizzo and Levigne.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Shenendehowa would add another run on a long solo HR to left-center by third basemen Frankie Pizzo.

In the top of the fifth inning Saratoga would try to respond. To start the inning middle infielder Zach Guzi would hit a long double to center-field, and would make it to third on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Stacey. After a short mound visit, Anderson would buckle down and record a strike out and ground ball on the next eight pitches. This would conclude Anderson's work for the day.

In the bottom half Shen would record their final run of the day. With one away Zak Sargent would reach on an error to bring up Nicholas Malachowski. Malachowski would double to right field, pushing Sargent to third. After a bang/bang play at the plate on a high chopper to shortstop, Josh Hayner was able to drive in Malachowski on a single to center.

This would conclude the scoring for the day, and would prove to be well enough for the Plainsmen.

Coach Christodulu would call on Senior LHP Brian Warzek to protect the lead. After a lead-off walk in the top of the sixth, Warzek would record the next six batters in order striking out four.

PBR's Take

Although Saratoga starter Jack Herman recorded the loss, he shouldn't hang his head on his performance today.  Herman held the No. 1 team in the state to only five hits in his five innings of work. He lived on the corners with his fastball, and changed speeds well.  Breaking ball showed good 11-5 shape with depth. Looking forward to seeing him toe the rubber again.

Shen is extremely deep, and it's hard to think of any team in the across New York, let alone in their section with two arms like Anderson and Warzek - and their deep lineup. In the field they look above average, coached up solid, play upbeat and fast. This is baseball - so anything can happen, but beating this team is going to be tough.
