LaSalle Institute 4 - Troy 1 |
Whenever Troy and LaSalle get together it seems as if tensions are high and both teams are playing for more than just the W, and today's game was no different. With Troy stealing a win in their last contest 6-5 on a walk off single by Ryan Ruddy, LaSalle institute was out to make a statement. In the first time since last Spring, two teams from section 2 played a game in the sun, with temperatures above 60 degrees. Finally it feels like baseball season is here.
Lasalle would start Jerry Burke against Troy High's Bryan Seabury. In the bottom half of the 2nd inning Troy would strike first. With the count even at 1-1, Anthony Eaton would line a triple to deep center. On the following pitch, the left fielder Sean Davis lined a single through the left side. With the momentum on their side, and the feeling of a big inning to come, Troy couldn't push across another run. Burke was able to get out of the inning with a pair of ground balls and a strikeout. At the end of a long 2nd inning Troy up a run, but the lead wouldn't last long.
In the top of the third with 1 out Basila would bloop a single into right, in front of a diving Nick Pastore. After another single, and a fly out to short stop, Lasalle's 3 hitter Nick Jacques stepped to the plate.. Jacques would work a walk on 9 pitches to load the bases for the clean up man 1st baseman, Justin Germain. Germain had struct out in his previous at bat, but this time was much different. After a ball in the dirt neatly blocked by Troy sophmore catcher John Germinario, Germain blasted a bases clearing double to left center (that to my amazement stayed in the ball park). He was tagged out at 3rd trying to stretch his double for the third out. Although LaSalle scored one more run in the top of the 6th, this proved to be more than enough for LaSalle and their junior right hander.
Burke scatted 5 hits across the next 5 innings and didn't allow a single walk, going the distance in a very respectable 89 pitches. His line for the day : IP(7.0) Runs(1), BB(1), Hits (7), K's(6)
PBR's Take |
Burke was very impressive late. He wasn't sharp early, but he battled, and found a way to get out of innings. The last 3 innings he was visibly throwing harder and his breaking stuff was excellent. Showed a tight slider/cutter with hard 10-4 break. Struck out out 5 of the last 9 batters. LaSalle as a whole is pretty intriguing. Today they looked as if they could beat anyone. Great defense and some senior leadership might take this team from a possible sleeper to front-runner in sectional play. Brendan Haverty looked strong at the plate going 3-3 with an RBI. The 1-2 punch of Germain and Haverty could be out of the toughest in the area. Well coached team, plays hard, fun to watch.
