November 19, 2014
Dan Cevette
Director, New York
PBR New York sat down with the 3B Nate Chase, a standout for Webster Schroeder HS, for a deeper look inside his recruiting process.
Name: Nate Chase
High School: Webster Schroeder
Position: 3B
Commitment: Niagara County CC
Chase's Top Three: Niagara County, Neumann, John Carroll
Top Offer: Niagara County
PBR: When did you start looking into schools?
Chase: I started seriously considering schools the summer of my senior year.
PBR: When did you go on your first college visit?
Chase: I took my first college visit in the fall of my junior year.
PBR: What did PBR offer you from a recruiting standpoint (The Process)?
Chase: Coach Clingersmith was able to see me early in the summer at the North Collins event and I was able to showcase my progression in August at the Top Prospect Games at St. Bonaventure.
PBR: What did you like about the PBR events you attended?
Chase: They are unlike many other showcases in the fact that everything is run quickly and smoothly while still allowing the players a good amount of time to show themselves. Also, the chance to work with the great PBR staff of coaches on the field was unlike anything I had attended before.
PBR: Do you think showcases are necessary for players looking to pursue a collegiate baseball career?
Chase: Yes, attending the right ones can really open doors for players because of the exposure to schools that they could only get at a showcase. Most coaches are just not able to come out to enough games to get a real feel for a player.
PBR: How did you land at your commitment?
Chase: Niagara County was the last school that I visited so I had a good feel for what I was looking for. While on the visit I realized that it was the right place for me because of the strength of the team year in and year out along with the coaching staff’s passion for winning. Coach Clingersmith is great at developing talent and has the connections to move his players on to great 4 year programs.
PBR: What words of advice would you give for the upcoming classes based on your recruiting experience?
Chase: Make sure that you’re attending the right showcases, there are a lot of them out there that aren’t as well run as PBR and don’t have as many coaches at them. You have to be realistic about your abilities and always consider the academics as well as baseball when looking at schools.
Scouting Report On Chase
+ Chase stands 6-foot-0, 180-pounds and a frame with a lot to like. He fields the ball with a wide balanced stance, quick transfer, clean arm action and throws from a low ¾ slot at 77 mph (more in the tank). At the plate he starts wide and balanced, hands by his face, back load on the pitch with a small stride. He uses great weight transfer, balanced swing, level bat path through the zone with long extension. Signs of power potential.
