Frewsburg 11 - North Collins 8

In some of the only baseball action in Western New York today Frewsburg traveled to North Collins to take on the section 6 class D champions from 2014.  Frewsburg got out to an early lead scoring three in the first inning as Junior Kole Brink led off the game with a walk and was then driven in by and RBI single up the middle from Senior Bryce Raymond.  In the 3rd Senior Chris Pullinski crossed the plate to bring the Eagles to within two.  In the 4th Frewsburg got a line drive single from Centerfielder Christian Proctor followed by a walk from Kole Brink.  Junior Catcher Michael Mammoser followed up with a huge two RBI triple.  Mammoser then scored on a SAC fly from Bryce Raymond.  In the top of the 5th Junior Shortstop Kole Brink drove in a run on an RBI single to right.

North Collins battled back and brought the game within two late.  However in the top of the 7th Frewsburg put what seemed to be the dagger in scoring four in the top of the 7th.  Led by singles from Reid Bjork, Christian Proctor, and Kole Brink, Frewsburg managed to plate three runs on past balls to take an 11-5 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

North Collins showed some resiliency in the bottom of the 7th  when they managed to plate three runs, led by Sophomore Harley Mehnert who led the inning off with a Home Run deep to left center.  Despite the late rally by North Colllins, Frewsburg hung on to win 11-8.

Frewsburg was led on the mound by Senior LHP Koby Carder.  Carder managed to strike out 11 batters in his six innings of work.  He showed good movement on his breaking ball and was able to keep the Eagles hitters off balance and chasing all afternoon.  Though not overpowering with his fast ball Carder showed good command all day and should be a solid starting arm in Section 6, Class C this year.

For an early season game in rough conditions, each of these teams looked well coached and should have a chance to make a run at their divisions this spring.  I look forward to seeing how things shake out this spring for some of the small school talent in Western New York.
