Cornwall 3 - Goshen 1 |
A pair of 2015 RHP's hooked up on a warm Thursday afternoon in what turned out to be an old fashioned pitcher's duel. Cornwall, the 22nd ranked team in the latest Prep Baseball Report- NY poll hosted Division rival Goshen in the third game of their season series. On the bump for the visiting Gladiators was St. John's commit Cole Whitney and for the host Green Dragons it was Alex Mack, a St. Thomas Aquinas commit.
Baseball traditionalists would have been proud as both pitchers challenged hitters early and often, Whitney with a fastball mid-upper 80's for most of the game and Mack who pitched at low-80's. Both teams traded runs early on, Cornwall with 1 in the bottom of the 1st and Goshen with 1 in the top of the second on a wild pitch. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 5th. A one out infield single by 2B Chris McLaren (2 hits on the day) followed by a coupling of passed balls and intentional walks, set the stage for a 2 run single through the drawn in Goshen infield by 2017 CF/C Domnick Marzigliano. Whitney's day ended in the 6th after a 1 out walk. His final line was 5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 K, 4 BB (2 intentional). 2018 LHP Rob Hensey Jr. came in to get the final two outs in the 6th. The freshman with a clean delivery pounded the zone, sitting between 75-77, touching 78 MPH.
For the Green Dragons, Alex Mack was up to the task. He went the distance, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 7 and walking four. Mack, who displayed a sweeping breaking ball in the low 70's, comes at you with a 2 O'Clock arm slot with some cross body action due to a slight closing off with the stride. The projectable righty checks in at 6'4", closing in on 6'5" and is all legs and arms. Cornwall showed why they are the class of Section IX has they played clean baseball and fought off one of the top arms in the area.
